Hi everyone,
I'm new to the message board and just found out last week that I'm pregnant (9 weeks yesterday). I have had PCOS since I was 16 and I am 31 now. I took fertility pills in 2010 (Clomid) and nothing was happening. My doctor said I wasn't ovulating and at the end of the year, I quit trying. Then in October, my husband and I split up, but by November we had "reconnected" a couple of times. So, when I didn't have a period in December, I chalked it up to PCOS. Then I went to a regular doctor's visit in January and they tested me twice. It was positive both times and a third time at home. Now, I'm excited but still a little freaked out. How did this happen? Will everything be ok, even if I have this condition? My first ultrasound and blood test isn't until next week. Yikes!
Re: Pregnancy and PCOS
I had a friend try for 2 years and nothing!
She was referred to someone and they did blood work. The doctor said they could not help her... She was very upset but it was becasue she was already pregnant. She has a happy 2 yr old now!
Sometimes life works in funny ways.
I also have a few friends with PCOS and multiple children, all healthy pregnancies.
I am just lurking, but wanted to let you know a happy and healthy pregnancy is possible. DH and I tried for almost 2 years to get pregnant, eventually getting the PCOS diagnosis. After 2 rounds of Clomid, I was pregnant and now I have a beautiful, healthy 2 month old son who is the light of our lives. The first 13 weeks were scary, just to be sure the pregnancy stuck, but all in all my pregnancy was great. I actually miss pregnancy A LOT and am ready to experience it again. If it were up to me I would get pregnant right away...but with PCOS it's unlikely that it will happen again on its own as quickly as it would with Clomid.
Congrats and wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy!
I have PCOS, and my sister-in-law and aunt both had months/years of trying and many fertility treatments and effort, so we felt pretty safe that I wasn't going to get pregnant on accident.
Surprise! I did. Whoops! Apparently we PCOS ladies still need to be careful if we aren't trying.
Good luck with your pregnancy and I hope you and your husband patch things up!
Congrats! I conceived my son naturally (surprise baby) and everything went great! This time I conceived with Clomid, and we had a heartbeat at 7.5-8 weeks.
I have heard that the miscarriage rate is higher (maybe due to fluctuations in hormones? I don't know), but I have heard a lot of success stories too. My guess is most of those would be early miscarriages (such as a chemical pregnancy, around the time of a BFP)...but I'm no doctor.
Try not to worry. Stress isn't good either. It'll be okay!
My RE confirmed this during our 2010 IVF cycle. It also puts us at a higher risk of hypertension and gestational diabetes.
There are PLENTY of healthy PCOS babies though. My IVF baby was born this past Aug. I did deal with the gestational diabetes and towards the end of pregnancy - hypertension issues but everything went fine and she was healthy.
We just got a surprise BFP last month! My doc always makes sure his PCOS patients are on metformin during pregnancy. It helps regulate the insulin in our bodies and makes sure the baby isn't getting excess from us (which is one of the reasons m/c happens with PCOS).
Good luck and try not to stress!!
The challenge with PCOS is getting pregnant so I think you are good
H&H 9 months to you.
Edit: I have PCOS. I did not have to be on Metformin or any other med during pg, other than synthroid which treats my hypothyroidism, not PCOS.
