Parenting after a Loss

Ques for those that have done their own purees..

So I am having trouble with pears, I don't eat a lot of them so I dont know a ton about them.  I peeled and sliced a ripe pear and pureed it up in the food processor and within a few minutes the puree started to brown.  Is that normal?  Is there a way to avoid that?

I've done sweet potatoes and green peas, both with easy success, but these pears are giving me trouble Smile

  • I don't 'do' pears, but I would imagine that's normal- I think a raw apple would do the same. If you boil/steam it, it may stay closer to the whiteish color (again, like apples). I think the exposure to air does it.

  • Mine browned too, totally normal. So do apples, bananas and avocados.

  • I'm not big on pears myself, but DS loved them.  When I made them I steamed the pears before I pureed them (add some cinnamon for extra fun!).  I put them straight from the food processor into the freezer and I didn't notice any browning.

  • hmm, maybe the steaming is the key...

  • You could also add a few drops of lemon juice which should keep it from browning when exposed to air.  Not sure if boiling it first would help.

  • Even though it's brown, it's shouldn't affect the taste or nutrition. It just looks nasty.

  • If you steam them first, they wont turn brown. I've done them both ways- steams and raw. The raw pureed ones browned instantly, the steamed ones did not.

  • I steam them and they stay white, tastey looking.  I found them to be really thin though, so I always mixed them with some baby cereal to thicken them up when I fed them to DS1.  Actually, that was a good one to mix with other veggie or meat purees once you start making combination meals.

  • I always steamed my pears first.  I have the baby berezza, so it was really easy.  I never had any issue with it changing color.

This.  I have done pears a lot and freeze them, and sometimes they brown and sometimes they don't.  I don't know why they only brown sometimes, but I always taste them and they always taste the same and are good.
