Nursery Furniture Help

Where did you find your nursery furniture or where are you looking?  My DH and I have found a few we LOVE, but we aren't sure we should spend so much money!

Re: Nursery Furniture Help

  • We plan to buy furniture at Babies R Us. I liked Pottery Barn Kids but it was more then DH and I were wanting to spend.

  • We got a crib and change table/dresser through Sears.  It was a little pricier than we had first thought but should be good, solid furniture to make it through 2 kids.
  • We actually found ours at Wal-Mart online. Really cute and reasonably  priced. Good Luck
  • We plan to vintage shop and repurpose dresser/wardrobe if we can find 1... reuse      DS#1 bed...basically trying to find unique pieces :)

  • We spent A LOT on DS1's furniture and we don't regret it.  He'll have it until he's off to college.  It was $2100 for a crib, full conversion rails, dresser, hutch and nightstand.  And it's still beautiful.  Munire Essex collection.  We bought it from a "local" (out of the way for us at the time, but it was the closest store to us that sold it) baby boutque with EXCELLENT customer service.  When the furniture was delivered, the corner of the hutch fell off as we were unpacking it, so a few weeks later, the owner of the store brought us a brand new one and apologized for the problem.  The worst part was the wait for it.  It was an 8-12 week turn around time on orders and because we lived so far from the store, they didn't make deliveries to our area often, so it had to be specially scheduled... which made the exchange of the damaged piece an even bigger problem.  Turns out they were delivering a chair to a friend of mine a few miles away when we got our replacement hutch.

  • We got a Graco set at Walmart -- they have the same stuff as BRU but for much less.

  • We are looking at Serena and Lily and Bel-Bambini for a crib.

  • We got a dresser/changing table free as a hand-me-down, and we'll probably buy a crib from Craigslist. If we don't find one on Craigslist they have inexpensive ones at wal-mart and target. The only things we plan on buying new are a crib mattress, car seat, and jogging stroller. We also have a rocker and chest of drawers in other rooms that we'll repurpose for the nursery.

    Ditto. :)

  • We were looking at Munire and Stanley Young America, but will probably go with the latter because we like it a little better, there are lots of pieces we can add to later, and it's made in the USA!  It's on sale right now, which helps!

  • I feel the same as you.  I want to buy qualtity furniture (solid wood, etc) but have a hard time wrapping my mind around spending 4 figures when I see so many women on these boards talk about how pleased they were with their $100 Ikea crib.  And I'm concerned that the baby will chew it up despite any efforts to protect the rails.

I think I'm going to find 3 sets at 3 different price points and let DH make the final determination.

Bottom line is neither of us want to end up with crap: drawers that don't close properly, furniure "sets" that don't match because the crib is solid wood but the dresser is MDF, or nails sticking out.

  • Teen and crib city -  it's by Munire and it's lasted through two kids - now we are on our third.  It was as much as some of the expensive babies r us furniture.

  • The budget is a little tight for us...so we go to trusted yard sales/thrift stores and such. We've found some really great finds for a really great price!

  • Mine is from a lot of  furniture stores that do not sell baby furniture :) the Crib we found on Amazon ( free shipping and no sales tax too) The dresser ( also to be used as the changing table) from west elm, shelving from Ikea, artwork bedding and fun decor from etsy.com . I also hit up a few vintage stores to find the lamps and unique items to make it even more personalized :)

THIS!  Stanley Young America is great, I have researched their company on the consumer product safety commission website and they are great.  Knowing that its made in the USA I don't have to worry about all the guidelines being followed.

  • I like to window shop, verify prices, read over reviews then check to see if the item is available on Amazon.com or O.co ~ typically it is. Can't beat the price or shipping costs
  • We're ordering our convertible crib and changing table from BRU.  I haven't decided on a dresser yet.

  • We got ours from amazon and my husband put it together this weekend and I was pleasantly surprised at how sturdy it is.  We got the Stork brand, I think it was under $200.  The only problem we had with one of the cribs was a stripped screw on a leg, we are going to call tomorrow to see if they can just replace that leg.  There were a ton of options on Amazon with different price points, and the best part was free shipping!  I also know that JC Penney has some great pieces, their prices are a little higher but you can get an entire matching room set for like $700.  Hope that helps! :)

  • Here's my strong feeling about nursery furniture - I think "heirloom quality" pieces are a waste. Any crib I buy will be out of safety standards by the time I would be ready to pass it down, and I figure at some point my kid is going to want to pick their own furniture, and might not like the things I picked out for him or her in infancy. We're going super simple - I'll borrow an arm's reach co-sleeper or other bassinet from someone for the first few weeks, and we'll get an Ikea Gulliver crib and an Ikea Malm dresser. We'll put a changing pad on the dresser top instead of getting a changing table. We have a low bookshelf that's solid maple from my aunt's parents that we'll put in there for the kid's books, and I'll get a couple of bins for toy storage when we're at that point. Oh, and I have a rocking chair from when I was a kid, and a friend is going to give us a glider that I'll recover. So I expect to spend $100 for the crib, another $130 for a mattress, and $170 for the dresser, plus probably another $20 or $30 for the changing pad. $430 for the whole nursery, plus paint and linens.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I love good furniture, and have quite a bit of it in the rest of the house. I just really don't see the point in investing in quality furniture for someone who will likely develop their own taste before they're done with the dresser, and I'd like the option of letting my kid pick their own bed when they're ready to move out of the crib. And I have no interest in storing conversion rails between now and then. Living in a small apartment and being too superstitious to set up a nursery before the baby is born also both incline me towards going with minimal stuff that I can pick up and put together myself quickly, as opposed to waiting three months for delivery.

  • We're doing a mix and match.  Our crib is coming from Walmart (Graco Lauren), our dresser is coming from Ikea (Hemnes), and we're getting a bookshelf from either Ikea or Target.  Oh, our glider is coming from a furniture store (rocker recliner).
  • We tried not to spend too much since we had to buy 2 dressers, 2 cribs. We found a great deal at Babies r Us https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4231538

If you buy the set (crib, tall dresser, short dresser/changing table) you get the crib free...so since we need 2 we got one free and bought and extra.  This works out well so when they get bigger and have their own rooms, each crib will convert and each will have a matching dresser.

we saved $500.  I think the sale has changed this week to 20% off the 3 piece collection.
