traveling with out baby- how to transport milk???

Hi all,

I have a 6 month old that is still only on breastmilk (no formula).  I am going to be out of town for 4 days and would like to fly home with my frozen bags of milk.  Do you have any suggestions for coolers that can go inside my suitcase?

I was thinking something like this:

Any other ideas, suggestions?  Anyone else had to do this?  FYI my flight is about 5 hours.

Thanks!

  • Did your pump come with a cooler? That link you posted looks like it would work fine.  If the milk thaws during your trip, just make sure to not refreeze the milk.

  • Any soft-sided cooler should work fine.  I recommend dry ice to keep it frozen longer - you never know what sort of delays you might run into this time of year.  I'd also bring the milk back in your carryon instead of your checked bag  (it's an exception to the 3 oz. liquid limitations).  As long as you have a good amount of frozen chunks inside of the BM when you get home, you can still freeze them.

  • I traveled just about every week when I was nursing and just carried it all in my carry on. BM is exempt from the 3oz rule. In just used the cooler that came with my pump. I did also buy a cooler bag with large handles...sort of like a lunchbox when I was carrying hundreds of ounces home. I would fly from Atlanta home and they would stay cold even w/o ice...just from being packed tight and very cold...almost frozen from the hotel mini fridge.

  • No advice on what to use as my LO isn't here yet, but I thought I'd add that not only is BM exempt from the 3oz rule, it also does not have to be x-rayed! So be sure you keep it separate and let them know what it is.
