Babies on the Brain

Two door or 4 door car?

Hi I'm Andy - I typically post on TTGP.  I know a lot of you have babies so I'm wondering if you have any thoughts/opinions.

H and I are currently TTC.  We are obviously hoping to get KU soon.  My lease is up on my car in 25 days.  I currently drive a very nice 2 door VW Rabbit.  It only has like 39,000 miles on it and we can buy it for a great deal.  However, every time I mention my car to people who know I'm TTC they look at me as if I'm crazy.

Now is the time to decide if we should buy my 2 door car or invest in a 4 door.  What do you ladies think?  Do you think it's ridic to keep a 2 door with a baby hopefully in the future?  Do you think it's silly to invest in a 4 door car if we aren't even preg yet?

TIA!

Re: Two door or 4 door car?

  • If it were me, I'd go for a 4-door. I would definitely not want to wrestle an irritate two-year-old into a carseat in a 2-door.

  • I had a 2 door when I had my second. IT WAS HELL, but I am short and my kids get heavy very quickly. I hated having a 2 door car with 2 kids, but I also hate small cars period so that isn't strange.

    I don't think it is ridiculous, but I wouldn't keep a 2 door if I were TTC.

I bought a crossover with 3 rows a year before I decided to have our 3rd because I knew we would try again, so I can't say I think its silly.

  • I don't have any personal experience, but my friend had a 2 door Acura coupe that she LOVED. She got pg and swore she'd never give up her car. Yeah, her daughter was born in May, and after 6 months of fighting with the fold-down seats, maneuvering a baby in a heavy infant carrier in and out, plus the lack of trunk space for her stroller, etc that most coupes/smaller cars have... She just traded it in for a crossover suv.

  • A friend of mine has an older model 2 door explorer and with a 6 month old now would give her right arm for a 4 door.  She would tell you to please get a 4 door while you can!

  • I would never dream of having a 2 door with an infant.

  • I have a 4 door and it's hard enough getting my infant in and out of it. I can't even begin to imagine doing it with a 2 door. I say get the 4 door if you're hoping for a baby soon.

  • I would hate wrestling a kid into a carseat in a 2 door. Another thing to consider is if a convertible carseat will even fit in the backseat of your 2 door. Another mom at daycare recently had to switch because it wouldn't.

  • I can't imagine driving a car that only has 2 doors to begin with, so I'm biased. That said, if you're in the market for a new car, I would get a 4 door. We have a Subaru Forester and I love it. It has the biggest sunroof I've ever seen. I've been driving Subarus for 20 years and can't say enough about them.

  • I would get a 4 door. I don't have children, but if I was in your position, I'd get a 4 door. I would also maybe get one that is not so low to the ground so you don't have to bend down to get the baby out of the car...I drive an Aveo (which is shaped very similarly to a Rabbit) and I don't think I would want it for when we have a baby....Hope this helps :)

  • I drove a Smart and planned on keeping it and then using my husband's 2-door Civic for a baby. But then the idea of having to get an infant seat in and out of his car became less and less attractive after I got pregnant. So I traded in the Smart and got a 4-door Mazda2. I'm very happy with my decision.

  • I say go for at least a 4 door! I say at least because of a few questions:

Do you plan on only having one child? (if so then a regular old, 4 door should be fine)

If you plan on having 2 or more, you might want to consider something in a suv or van option. (maybe depending on needs)

Do you travel alot? Do you visit relatives often? How far are those relatives?

How long do you plan on keeping this next vehicle? (Plan on keeping it 10 years? what if you need to cart your kids' friends somewhere?)

Any chance of having multiples? (you may plan on just 2 but what if you ahve one, then get pg again and have twins?)

I bring these up to help think through future needs.

We are saving up and plan to get a van in the next year or 2. (I want an Odyssey!) (the sliding door will be a Godsend!)

Right now we both drive Chevy Cobalts (which I hate, no room, no storage space, etc)

We have 2 kids, and want at least one (maybe 2) more- we need seat room. DH's parents live 15 hours (by car) away so there is no way we can drive that far in our current car. (That far we'd at least stay a week and so much stuff would need to come with us, we couldn't make it)

We made the trip once when we had only our first child- the car was stuffed full and we didn't ahve 'extra' un-needed things either) There is no way we could attempt that trip with 2 kids.

We plan for our kids to be active (tennis, soccer, dance, etc...) traveling for games, carpooling, etc- is in our future. I'd rather be the mom with extra room, than have my kid beg to go ride with her friend because there's no room in our car for that friend (I would say no, because I'm that mom who'd trust no one to drive my precious cargo)

Currently, my DS (16 months) will not keep on his socks or shoes in the car, so every time we have to get out of the car I stand out of the door and put in his socks and shoes. Thankfully, our temps haven't gotten too cold, but still. When it rains, I am standing out in the rain putting on his socks and shoes. In a van I would be able to be out of the elements and have room to just step back to him to do this.

    I hope that helps.

  • Just my opinion, but I would never want a 2-door car with kids.  It'd be fine while the baby only weighs 8 pounds, but as soon as he or she is bigger it'd be a pain in the tush.  I would definitely invest in a four-door car.  The VW Jetta is great, if you want to stick with a VW...DH has one and the back seat is huge, as is the trunk.

  • I had a 2 door car when DS was an infant.  It was hard and I desperately wanted a 4 door car and ended up getting one.

  • It's really had to get a toddler in a car seat in a full sized suv sometimes.  I can't imagine trying to do it in in a 2 door car.

Also think about the trunk and if you can fit a stroller in it.

  • I have a 2 door and we're going to be TTC starting in March... I'm definitely looking for something 4 door!!
  • I hate two-door cars even without children...I'd definitely go for the four-door, but that's just my opinion!

  • We have a 4 door car that we use as our primary car.

We also have a 2 door car that is only used when we really need it. I HATE IT. Its extremely inconvenient. I really really hate having to use it, so usually DH does. But often we bicker about it because I get bitchy if I have to take B anywhere in it.

I wanted to sell it over the summer, but DH wants to run it into the dirt since its paid for.

    I would get a 4 door.
