XP: Traveling with a 19 month old

I originally posted this in Toddlers 12-24 months and they told me to come here.

DH and I are taking LO on a cruise in June (she'll be 19 mos at that time). We will be going to Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and Mexico. I am trying to find the best sling/wrap/baby carrier to take LO around in, but I'm having a hard time deciding because most of them look like they're for infants. I'm not generally a baby-wearer, but I realize that it'll be necessary for a trip such as this.

Most of the baby carriers I see are only for your back when the kids get to her age, but I'll need to be able to wear her on my front as well. Does anyone know of a good baby carrier that goes on the front and back that can comfortably hold a child of her size (about 26 pounds)?

  • My DD is 20 months and I love the Ergo. We travel/fly a lot and I never take a stroller. My DD is 22 lbs but I still wear her in front a lot going though the airport (last time was 3 weeks ago) or when it is cold and I need to cover her with my coat. I haven't done it for prolonged periods of time (front that is, and by prolonged I mean more than 30-60 minutes) but it sounds like you wouldn't be doing that either, especially since she is/will be walking. So far it is comfortable either front or back, but if I have to carry her for a prolonged period of time I usually have her on my back. At this point though I don't carry her as much anymore since she walks a fair amount, but in the airport that's not really an option. I still do my grocery shopping with her on my back because she doesn't last long in the cart plus I need the room...!

  • I really like my wraps. My favorite right now is a linen blend size 3/4. I use it for a hip carry to nurse on the run and a Ruck tied in front. I am on vacation in Florida and brought this size plus a longer one - size 6 - but I haven't used the longer one yet.

Dh has an ergo but I don't care for it, although I haven't tried it now the she is older. I like having her up higher though.

My lo is 21 lbs. I have a friend who used her ergo until her dd was 4 and 35 lbs.

  • I second the Ergo. we use it for my near 30 pound son.  Has front, back and side carries.  Easy to take on and off as well.

  • I'd say a Beco or an Ergo. Slings are great, but it won't be as secure or as hands free. Try to find a local store where you can try them on. I have an Ergo, but I think a Beco would fit me better since I am petite and I also hear it is easier to switch from front to back while wearing your LO. Good luck!

What carriers are you looking at?  Most quality carriers can be used into toddlerhood.  I'm not generally a baby-wearer, but I realize that it'll be necessary for a trip such as this.

I can't think of any carrier that can be used on the back only.

Check out these types of carriers then narrow it down to the kind you want.  The ladies here are awesome about sharing their experiences with specific manufacturers.

What do you mean that a sling isn't "as secure or as hands free" as an SSC?

  • We have a boba. I wore it with our first until I was about 32 weeks pregnant, so he was 16ish months, and about 27 lbs. it was really easy to use even while pregnant. We looked at the ergo and beco before buying the boba- the boba just fit my husband and I best.
