big boy revamp! (long and lots of questions)

So H loves that map on his wall. So now  we need to figure out what paint will "go" with it.  It's this map:

I was hoping he'd want to change to robots and rockets, but I felt bad asking, "do you want this map or robots on your wall" so I asked, "do you want the map or to paint the wall a new color" and he jumped up and asked papa to pick him up and pointed to where we live and where the grandparents live etc, so I dropped it.

He's got dark furniture now and the bedding isn't coordinated to the map, he's got car sheets and rocket sheets and a blue duvet, which I want to replace with something else (not sure what).

Do you think i could just put some fun art on the wall even if it's not in theme with the wall map?

We took the sliding doors off the closet and have his dresser in there and a corner shelf where his books are. I saw a cute system at ikea with a wardrobe, drawers, shelves and a bench seat with storage under. I thought the bench could be a reading nook.  O thinks we should knock down the closet walls and make it a flat wall if we do the "system".

Do you think we'll regret taking out the closet? It's just one shallow wall and a sliding door frame, we could put it back up to sell. I've seen this solution in a lot of bay area homes. Most of the homes out here are from the 50's and 60's and just not "big" enough for today's furniture/style. It seems a lot of people convert the closet to a bed area. So it wouldn't be that weird, but it feels weird. Baby J will inherit the room at some point too so it'd be a long while before we'd need to change it.

As long as we are talking giant wall mural, I was thinking if it was staying, we should frame it like a giant picture. The edges are coming loose and there's some wear and tear on them. I though we could just use crown molding trim to make a basic frame on it. Sound cool or weird?

Ok, that's enough, give me your thoughts/opinions :)

  • My two thoughts are-

    1) I think crown molding around the map sounds super cool. Also, if the map is just paper, could you overlay it with some sort of laminate? It seems like if you're going to go the trouble of putting crown molding around it, you want to make sure it's well preserved from sticky fingers.

    2) I like a more eclectic look with kids rooms, so I don't see any problem with mixing themes and adding new while preserving old. Especially as kiddos get older and are more aware of their surroundings.

  • p.s. Where'd you get the map? I'd love to get one!
  • The map came with the house :)

I don't think I like it enough to do more than let FIL and husband do the molding ;)

  • I wouldn't take out the closet, because I think then you don't get to count it as a 'bedroom'.  that might be an old real estate 'rule', but I'd check to make sure it doesn't apply because it would really make a difference when you decide to sell someday.

  • I like the framing it idea. And I think the map is cool. Tou can go to the home depot aisle and they have lots of different types of molding. They're typically 14' and relatively cheap.

Id stick with just a neutral wall color. Heck even white. Since its a large map that draws the attention.

What about Bedding with boats or some nautical theme? That kinda goes with maps.

  • Wall color- I would go with a light blueish gray.  There is the cool tool I saw on pinterest a while back that give you a color palate from a picture.  https://www.creaturecomfortsblog.com/home/2009/7/30/web-help-color-palette-generator.html

If the edges are coming up I think framing it is a good idea.

If he also loves rockets and robots, then sure why not incorporate them!  Abby's room right now is dinos and legos- the two things she loves most.  Oh, and in totally not your typical dino color scheme- we have orange, pink and red.

If you do decided to go more themed off of the map a travel- trains, cars, planes would be really fun and could make it a little more kiddish.

You might have already seen this but here are some kids rooms with maps!
