Vacation in Mexico

I have a week off in early March and want go on vacation. I will be 18wks by then and the dr said it should be fine. I was thinking about an All Inclusive in Mexico but DH thinks Mexico is too risky now that I'm pregnant. We have been there many times before but now he is concerned about the water, food, crime etc. It didn't bother him before.

Is anyone else planning a trip to Mexico? What are your thoughts?

Re: Vacation in Mexico

  • We went during my last pg, and it was fine.  The resorts are set up to accomodate tourists and have plenty of bottled water and safer food practices.  Especially if you are at an AI resort.

  • I went to Puereto Vallarta 2 weeks ago and everything was fine. Food and drink - and tap water - at the hotel was fine, and when in town I went for bottled water. I'd say go and enjoy a lovely trip!

  • Where in Mexico do you want to go?  Most places are still very safe.  We went to Cancun on our honeymoon last April.  I felt 100% safe the entire time.  Also we stayed at a resort that had a whole water filtration system set up so you could drink the water without out any worries.  It was heaven!

  • I personally wouldn't chance it. I have been to Mexico probably 8 different times to many different locations and I have always felt pretty safe there but now things are very unsettled. Also, food poinsoning is a definite possibility there. Even if you drink bottled water, they do not cook with bottled water. I would be really concerned about ending up with severe food poisoning and in a Mexican hospital. There are so many other places to go (that are so much nicer anyway), why chance it?

Check out Bermuda - it is much safer, cleaner, nicer, but is still close. One of my favorite destinations.

  • I love Mexico. I think if you go to a resort that caters to Americans you should be fine. Just be extra careful with your soft cheeses and the like. And if you're really worried, you can just be extra careful and drink water only if it comes from a bottle, no ice, no produce without a peel. But I would think all that would even be fine at an AI.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • Chances are you will be fine, but I have a friend who lost her baby after visiting there. To me, things like that are not worth the risk.

  • I wouldn't go to Mexico and DH is Mexican! =) Honestly the stories terrify me. It is a beautiful place with beautiful people but the drug war is out of control. I'd go to Jamaica or something. I am jealous, I want to travel!

  • I think if you are going AI you are totally fine! Stick to bottled water. I have been to both Jamaica and Mexico and Jamaica is MUCH more of a risk. I have always felt safe in Mexico. (touristy parts) I would love to go to Mexico right now. I am freezing. :)

  • I went to mexico last year when I was pg with DD and I was just as far along as you are. We went to the Myan and stayed at an AI and everything was fine. I brought lots of sunscreen and the hotel offered bottled water nearly everywhere we went. I was also still able to enjoy the tasty drinks (virgin of coarse), but most of them are great for the warm weather such as the pina coladas or banana monkeys. I found that if you told the bartender you were pg they would offer you some really nice refreshing drinks as well. I packed a few snacks in my suitcase such as peanuts and small bags of chips or crackers that I could take to the pool or beach with me for when the restaurants were closed.

  • We just came back from Mexcio at the beginning of January.

The All Inclusive resorts there all use filtrated water for ice, and water as well as to cook with.  We were told that by both the signature vacations rep we had, as well as some locals we met in town. He said that any restaurant for tourists in town have to use bottled water as well, they can be fined up $5000 dollars, it's not worth it to them to not.

Eat cooked food, and drink bottled water and you will be fine. me and my DH ate everything and we were fine!

  • I am going to Cancun in late March and I'll be about 21 weeks. I'm not concerned. I plan on drinking bottled water , but I would do that anyway. Have fun!!

  • I'm going to p. v in feb. I will be about 16weeks preg. I cannot wait to lay on a beach and relax. We are staying at an all inclusive and cannot wait.
  • Im so glad you posted this. Before I found out I was pregnant we booked a trip to Cancun. I was planning on going as long as my doctor said it was ok (ill be 6 months preg when i go). The only thing people are scaring me with is "what if something goes wrong do you want to end up in a hospital in a foreign country"? ugh not sure what to do.
  • Have you been before?  Personally, I'd never do Mexico pregnant.  We've been three times (twice at very nice AIs) and EVERY time I've come home with bad diarrhea.  I'm always careful to only drink bottled water (and even use it for tooth brushing) but there are obviously a million ways to come into contact with bacteria.  I wouldn't want to chance that while pregnant.

Plus, as someone who has ended up in the ER during past pregnancies, I could not imagine going through that in Mexico.  No way.

I wouldn't risk Mexico.  There are plenty of great places to go with less risk.

I'm sorry that your friend lost her baby but it had nothing to do with visiting the country.

To the OP, I'd have no problem going. As others have pointed out, all inclusive resorts cater to tourists and many have water filtration systems of their own so the food and water is safe to consume.

  • We have been to Mexico several times, and just got back from Cuba last week.  I have never been sick while travelling, and our trip to Cuba was just what we needed.  Relaxing on the beach, drinking yummy (virgin) drinks, and swimming the ocean.  I wasn't nervous at all, make sure to drink bottled water and avoid milk and cheese (which most likely isn't pasturized), and have fun.

  • We went to Mexico when my SIL was expecting, and as long as you're on a resort you should be ok. Just carry around bottled water. Also, her doc told her to try and stay away from the cheese. Some of their cheese is unpasturized :(
