Adoption

Just Matched - and trying to stay sane! :-)

We just got the call a week ago friday that we were matched to a little baby boy due on Feb 9.   Our home study wasn't finished and not scheduled to be done until sometime in Feb, so obviously we're rushing now to complete it.  It should be done by tues/wed this next week.  Nothing like cutting it close huh? :-)

We're so excited! The last week has been crazy just getting paperwork done.   The contract is signed, the fee is paid and just a few minor pieces remain.  So now it's hard not to start buying everything.  There is of course the possibility that she'll change her mind so we don't want to go hog wild.

I've got the car seat, 2 outfits for the hospital, 4 onesies, 1 newborn toy, and a couple of bottles, some burp cloths (handmade) and receiving blankets (handmade).  I figure the hospital will send us home with some formula and diapers.

I'm hoping to make my diaper bag on Tuesday once I've finished any last errands for the home study.  If I can't get to it, I'll buy one.

I've been holding off on diapers cuz he's going to stay in the hospital for a little bit - probably 3 weeks, so it's hard to know what size will be correct.

What else do I actually need before we get to bring him home? I know a lot of things can wait.   I'm going to register before he's born but not share the fact until we actually have him.   That way, friends and family that are so excited can buy as soon as they want.

  • This exact thin happened to us, we were matched and our homestudy wasn't done.  Our son was then born (early) a week later it was crazy madness, but it was amazing!

Our son was in the NICU for a week, so we waited until the day before he was released to get everything. We asked the nurses what we needed. We got a packnplay for the hotel, while waiting for clearance to return to our home state.

I say ask the nurses they are really really helpful.

  • Congratulations!  We also had a very quick match and placement, so I know how crazy things are for you right now.  Since you'll have a little bit of a wait before you bring him home, you're probably fine with what you have.

The only thing I would suggest is to go ahead and get some diapers.  The hospital sent us home with about 10, which didn't last long at all.  Neither of us wanted to go back out running errands when we got home, so it would have been nice to have some on-hand.  Get size 1 - you'll be able to make them work in a pinch even if he's tiny.

    Good luck with everything!

  • We are in a very similar situation! Just got matched with a boy due Feb 7th. We have moved out of state and don't have our home study updated yet. We're working as hard as we can to have it done before we get a call that BM is in labor!

Congratulations!!!! You'll get everything done!!! Cant wait to hear an update!

  • Congratulations!  That's SO exciting!  I know it's SO hard to keep from going and buying everything and anything.

I would recommend maybe a few more clothing items/sleepers.  DD spit up a lot in the hospital and we probably went through 5/6 outfits and 4 sleepers in 48 hours :)

Keep us posted!!  Praying for you and BM!

  • What wonderful news!  Congratulations!
  • Congratulations!  We had the same situation. Our homestudy wasn't done yet, our profiles had only been shown for a week and a half, and we were picked! A year ago tomorrow, actually. : )  Our son was due on Feb. 13, but his birthday is this Thursday.  Needless to say, it was the craziest 36 hours (from phone call about being matched to his delivery) of our lives and also the most incredible.

Enjoy it all - you'll get everything done!
