TTC After a Loss

Anyone's OB NOT follow HCG to zero?

Hi all, I'm still pretty new but in reading various posts I see that many of you had repeat OB appts so that the OB could make sure your HCG levels had gone down to zero before giving you the ok to TTC again.

Mine just told me to wait 2 cycles. In fact, I was worried that I hadn't gotten my AF so I took a test and it came back positive (this was more than a month ago). Then I started reading and posting on here. Now I'm wondering why she didn't have me followup and do b/w to make sure my HCG levels went down? I'm frustrated with my OB anyway for other things she did and I'm definitely not going back to her when I get pg again.

But I wanted to know, did anyone else's OB not follow their HCG down to zero? For those of you whose OB wanted to do b/w till you were down to zero, did they every explain why, or was it just their routine procedure?

Thanks!

Re: Anyone's OB NOT follow HCG to zero?

  • My OB didn't follow my HCG levels at all.  The only bloodwork they did was to check my bloodtype before giving me Rhogam before my D&C.   She told me to wait two cycles as well.  I never asked her why she didn't follow it.  Maybe I should have?

  • My RE didn't follow my levels but I'm undergoing IF treatments so my situation is a little different.
  • My OB only did BW when I thought I was starting to m/c and then again 48 hrs. later at a follow up u/s. I had a follow-up 10 days later where I took a urine test. Because the test came out negative, the doctor said there was no need for further testing. My m/c was natural @ 8.5 wks. (I was naive and would ask more questions in the future if I had a repeat issue.)

I never asked my OB either. Don't blame yourself. We're in a haze after a m/c. It's the OB's responsibility to be proactive at that time. I went to see another OB afterwards (as a consult for a future pg) and she was shocked that my original OB did not follow my HCG down to zero.

  • My OB didn't follow my levels down. They did do a test at around 6 weeks post my 2nd D&C but that was because I was having odd symptoms. I was told to wait 3 months rather than cycles.

  • My OB didn't do b/w after my D&C.  When I asked why she didn't, she said once I get my period the HCG levels will be down to zero.  It's been 3 weeks since my D&C, so if I don't get my period within the next 2-4 weeks, I will be calling the office.  I'm giving myself a little longer b/c my m/c was at 11w4d, so my levels were pretty high.

  • My OB didn't follow my levels down to zero.  I'm not sure why.  She tested them when I started to m/c, and instructed me to wait one full cycle, until I got AF, to start TTC again.  She also said that if I hadn't gotten AF in about 60 days, to give them a call and we'd talk about Provera.  That's probably why she didn't follow them down.

However, I did follow them down with ICs.  The day after I got the last, faintest positive, I got AF.

  • I'm sorry for your loss.  My doctor did not follow my HCG levels down to zero.  He said there was no need to do it for me.  I think it just depends on the doctor and your situation.  Hope that helps.

My doctor did not do any blood work at all. She wanted to make sure I didn't have any retained tissue using ultrasound.

My midwife, OTOH, did follow HCG all the way to zero and didn't think I needed a pelvic exam, let alone ulrasound.

The bolded, for me. My OB didn't follow my levels down, just advised me to wait one cycle.

  • My OB didn't do BW after the last level was 30.  If I wanted him to, he would've...but he said that low enough to just let nature take its course.   My m/c was really early (5 weeks) so it was a CP and no D&C was needed.

And for my first m/c, they didn't follow my HCG but after a week of just spotting they did an u/s, which determined that I had not passed the sac and then I needed a D&C.   But he never did BW again after the D&C.

I think it just depends on your circumstances and your Dr.

GL and so sorry for your loss.

  • My OB did not follow my levels at all.  I did take an HPT awhile after (don't remember when) that came back negative.  When I hadn't gotten AF after 6 wks, the OB did a blood draw to confirm that the levels were at zero, which they were.  But, he would not have done that had AF come on time.  I think it's pretty normal to go without blood work, but if it made you feel uncomfortable, you should find a new doctor who will work the way you want to (though I hope you are never in this situation again).

  • My first loss she did, but they were at 2 when I had my follow up appointment. My second loss she did not and I got +HPTs for about a month.

  • My OB didn't do b/w after my m/c. I had a follow up u/s to make sure the tissue was gone and was then told to wait 1-2 cycles, mostly for emotional healing but also until my body got regulated. Since my first AF was so timely, I went in for another consult, in which she had me PIAC, she ran tests (I assume HPT) and she gave me the green light.

  • My Ob did not follow them done for either. The first time I had a d&c and this time I had a natural m/c at home. I did have a 48 hours u/s to confirm that I had passed everything. I suspect that if I still had tissue to pass they would have follow it down to zero. I was told to wait two months and then come in for bloodwork before trying again.

  • My OB did not follow HCG levels.  He only said to wait for a normal cycle before TTC again.  He just said that my body would know what to do and that he liked to let nature take it's course.

  • My OB did but only because I had a unique situation that required (and still requires) careful monitoring. Had my pregnancy not been a molar pregnancy then my OB would not have monitored my HCG levels and I would have been cleared to TTC after one cycle.
