S/O taking babies on vacation

I've seen a lot of ladies post about taking baby on a long car ride, and responses at how it's no biggy and how easy they are to travel with so young. But I haven't seen any posts about taking baby on a plane. Any ladies planning on doing this? Any mom's have experience with this?

I am in my cousin's wedding in July and have to take a 5 hour flight. I've read about take off and landing being rough on their little ears, so "they" suggest you give them a pacifier/bottle/boob while the plane ascends or descends. Any other tips?

  • That's pretty much it.  Make sure you change baby before you get on the plane, just to make your life easier.  Bring extra clothes. If you FF, bring extra formula.  You can bring powdered in little singe serving dry packets (like single serve crystal light almost).  Buy water when you get through security.  If you need it warm, bring an empty thermos and go to Starbucks for hot water.  I wouldn't recommend pre-mixing for a 5 hour flight, but you can get through with formula for a baby (or breastmilk in a bottle).  But, you can't get through with ice packs.  If you need them, bring a cooler bag and empty zip locs.  Fill the zip locs with ice when you get through security.

  • Upgrade to seats with extra legroom if you can ($50 or so) and insist on a window seat.. When lo is napping in your arms the last thing you want is for someone to walk by and bump her if you have an aisle seat or force you to get up so they can go to the bathroom.

  • I will be flying with LO when he is 4-5 weeks old to NY (we live in NC) so its a 3-5 hour trip with a layover. I am just going to pack the normal stuff in the diaper bag as I would any other day. I did upgrade my seats for more leg room and be able to be the first ones on and off...  If it does bother him I will either try to feed him or give him a pacifier..

  • DH, DS, myself and baby will be going to Ireland in June.  We are purchasing a seat for LO as it is so much easier.  The expense sucks but the ease of having that seat for a long flight is so worth it.  We went to Ireland with DS when he was 8 months old and bought him a seat.  Dont know what we would have done without it.

  • I fly often and flew often when DD was small.  You can fill bottles with the correct amount of water and then just bring powdered formula.  Security is fine with this at ALL airports because it is for the baby....they just test the water- open the bottle, wave a little piece of cloth over the top- never touching it- and let you on your way....NEVER use tap water on the plane...one flight attendant told me that it is gross and I will never try it!  The smaller they are, the easier it is!  Once DD was somewhat mobile- even crawling it was harder cause she was squirmy.  I like an aisle seat because if she is fussy then you can get up and walk the aisles and soothe her.  Good Luck!

  • We are flying 6+ hours in June (8w) and July (12w)

It'll be tough but I'm not worried. DH is coming too, I wouldn't fly alone that soon

  • Another tip is to tightly cup your hands around the baby's ears during the whole landing process. It helps equalize the air pressure somehow and reduces the pain they feel in their ears. (A flight attendant told my mom this trick) I have actually done it to myself when I had a bad cold and was having ear pain on landing and it actually did help a lot.

  • We don't travel by plan very often and the youngest I've had a child while doing it was 1.5yrs old.  I do have lots of friends that've done it with no issues. GL.

  • DS is 14 months and had been on 12 long-haul flights (visited 8 countries so far).  I was also a flight attendant years ago, so have some experience on both ends.  It's really easy when they're little.  DS only seemed to have his ears bother him once and that was last week at the end of a 6-hour flight and it wasn't bad.  They didn't bother him on the 10-12 hour flights we've been on with him.  It's recommended that you try nursing them or feeding a bottle on take-off and landing to help clear the eustachian tunes.  Even a soother can help with the sucking motion.  DS often fell asleep and stayed asleep during take-off so wasn't sucking and his ears never bothered him.  If you LO has a cold and you're supposed to fly, I would try and re-schedule.  That's when ear problems and pain arises.  Bring Tylenol/Advil just in case s/he's inconsolable.

Most airlines/airports you can gate-check your stroller (at London Heathrow they won't return it to the gate, which was a little frustrating).  Having an Ergo or a Bjorn to put them in is really handy.  Technically you can't have them in there during take-off and landing but it's much easier for boarding and during the flight to have your hands free while they're snug up against you.

    Hope this helps!
