HSG exam experiences?

I have an appt for a hysterosalpingogram on Tuesday. I know it's a pretty benign test but I was just wondering if anyone had serious cramping or infection afterwards? I was advised to take antibiotics before the test. I also am wondering if anyone knows if it's ok to get pregnant after the test during that same month? It seems to me it would be fine as long as the dye is out of your system, but maybe it's best to hold off trying that month? Any advice is welcome. I know I have to bring a pad and some IB.

Re: HSG exam experiences?

  • Honestly, it was bad for me. No cramping or infection but painful durring and for about an hour afterward. The dr made me have a ride home, and I am so glad they did, no way I could have driven myself home. I would equal it to my intense labor contractions. I got through it with breathing but laying still while they took the photos was hard. If you have something stronger than motrin, take it, or at least take it with you. I hope I didn't scare you, I just want to be honest.

  • I had bad cramping during, but was fine immediately after and able to drive myself home. I was advised to and took Advil before the test. It's my understanding that it's fine to get pregnant the same cycle as the test - there is some thought that it might even be a little easier to get PG the first month or two following because it clears out your tubes - don't know whether this is really true.

  • I was pretty uncomfortable during, but some deep breathing helped. I had cramping for an hour or two after. I honestly don't recall if I took prophylactic antibiotics or not, I vaguely think maybe I did. I drove myself home fine...and stopped for a milkshake on the way home as a treat...highly recommended :)

  • I took some Ibuprofen before hand, remained as relaxed as possible during the exam which helped minimize the discomfort, and packed a pad for afterwards.  I was able to watch the whole procedure on the screen and that was really neat IMO.  My cramping afterwards was like the first day of my period and only lasted for 4-6 hours.

The doctor told me not to TTC that cycle but we did anyways.

  • It was slightly uncomfortable for me but I had taken a strong dose of advil prior. I had no spotting or much cramping afterwards. I did have to take a pregnancy test prior to confirm that I wasn't pregnant. I relaxed and did deep breaths throughout the process. And I also thought it was neat to see everything on the screen, especially after the dye went through.

  • Thanks everyone. I hope the cramping isn't too bad for me because I don't have anyone to go with me. My DH has had to take a lot of days off because of the IF appt coming up, and we are interviewing and observing at a new school for E, so maybe I am naive but I am trying to go for it by myself. I will take some pain medicine, and I will definitely get myself some ice cream or a milkshake on the way home :) I am nervious, I think I will download one of my hypnobirth cds and try to do my relaxation with earphones.

  • Mine was pinchy, and I was glad I had dh with me. But... I could drive, but I felt violated afterwards.I like your idea of doing some relaxation exercises.
  • Maybe I can find a good app for my iphone. Thanks again. I really wish someone was coming with me. This was poor planning.

  • My experience was like Ariel's: I has no blockages, yet the procedure was one of the most painful experiences in my life. It hurt a lot during and I was uncomfortable for awhile after: so much so, I had to recline my seat as far back as possible on the drive home. There's no way I could've driven home. By the way, I have a very high pain thresh-hold. I remember getting dressed thinking 'if I can't make it through this test, how am I going to make it through the rest of the procedures leading up to a baby.. And then pregnancy?'

Experiences vary on this test: for some it's no biggie, for others (like me) it's really bad. Sadly, you don't know which camp tou'll fall into. I know your DH can't join you, but can anyone else? At least to drive you home? You might also be ready to take a cab too.

  • It can hurt during. I drove myself home afterwards...would have rather not though. But its pretty damn fast so thats good. Also my understanding is that it ups your chances of getting pregnant...like your tubes are all sparkly clean.

  • I had to take an antibiotic beforehand.  I think that is pretty standard procedure...

There was a lot of pressure during the procedure and then cramping afterwards that lasted a few hours.  I was drugged up on IB before, during and after the procedure and the cramping was comparable to my worst menstrual cramps x10.  DH was with me and I'm glad he was because I would not have been able to drive myself home.

Like the PP mentioned, everyone's experience is different and you just won't know until you get there.  Any way to have someone on-call in case you need a ride home?

  • Mine was less uncomfortable than a pap smear. Really mine was nothing, I went shopping after. :)

I am in this boat. It was so painful. No blockage. I have to get an SHG (saline one) in a few months and I am terrified to go through it again.

A, good news: the SHG is a breeze in comparison. I've had two, and while not awesome, closer to a pap smear discomfort. Relax about that one.

  • Thanks everyone. I won't say it was easy breezy but I definitely didn't have severe cramping afterward. I listened to a hypnotherapy app during the procedure which helped a lot. I guess I got lucky, thankfully. thanks for the warnings everyone. I appreciate it.
