I'm kind of bummed...

Sorry if many dont know me, I havent posted in a while but I will try to be around more. I miss you guys! Anyways, I have a uti and the type of uti it is requires me to be on a specific antibiotic that does not recommend breastfeeding while on it.

I am  an exclusive pumper and haven't put Annabelle to the breast since she was 2 days old (long and painful story why) and I produce about 50 oz a day give and take. For the next 3 days I have to pump and dump and its making me super bummed. I still have to pump and I feel like its such a waste of time and milk. I pump 6 times a day for 20 min. I start tomorrow. Not looking forward to this....

Thanks for letting me vent.

Ps. I cant even drain my sorrows in a bottle of wine either, cant drink on antibiotics! lol

Re: I'm kind of bummed...

  • Hey there! Long time no see :)

I had one last week and was given meds but was told I could still BF with them. I'd tell you what they were but I threw away the bottle :/

Hope you start feeling better. I would hate to pump and dump. One time I pumped and got 7 oz and I didn't seal the bag all the way and it leaked all over the bed. I was so pissed off at myself for it.

  • Well, if you're pumping that much you should have plenty in the freezer, so at least you don't have to give formula.  Welcome back!

  • Hi!  Welcome back!  I had a UTI when DD was 2 weeks old....the dr put me on sulfameth (?)....she gave me a 7 day dose, but told me to take it for 3 days and if I felt better, not to take the rest due to bfing.  She said it was ok to use while nursing, but of course, they don't want you on something longer than you really need to be while nursing.  it cleared up in the 3 days.  GL!

This one is called Cipro. They  said you can still breastfeed but proceed with caution. What the hell does that mean? Do  I put a helmet on her or something?

Yes! I do have a lot stored up so she does not have to go to formula. I think what bothers me the most is that I still have to waste the time pumping and get nothing out of it. Its like working for free.

When the doctor first called me he said 10 days and I said what?!?! I asked him if there is anything shorter and he said since I'm not having any symptoms that I can take it for just 3 days. I will take 3 days over 10 days any day.

Aww, you guys are beyond awesome!! The etsy shop is keeping me busy but it has slowed down a bit. My two most popular hats are my white teddy bear, baby booties and my flower hat. I need to make some new materials I just havent even had time to do that. The issue for me isnt making the hats but making my way to the post office. Its so cold and taking Annabelle out of the house is more of a pain than anything else.

  • I'm not sure why you need to take Cipro if you're not having symptoms, but you should be fine with a 3 day course. It's caused Achilles tendon rupture when given to puppies in animal studies and a some possible cases in humans. That's why it's to be used with caution. There are other antibiotics that are safer with BF, so you could either ask your Dr. to change it or just pump & dump 3 days. If you have flu-like symptoms (fever, vomiting, back pain), you should stick with Cipro.

I already started taking it so pumping and dumping it is. The doctor told me that due to the type of UTI, it has to be Cipro so I didnt question him.  Hopefully it helps!
