Healthy Sleep - Happy Child

Hi all,

 so A. has been sleeping up to 11 hours pretty much for weeks. About 10 days ago, that stopped. Now he does 6 and 4. Sometimes another 2 in the end. It sucks. Hard.

Now, I think it may be that he has had a cold (it just starts to go away). But a friend gave me that book. Correct me if I am wrong, but that is in essence nothing else than CIO (which I don't stand for at all), right?

Anyways, this post may be pointless. I hope he will start to sleep better soon.

  • I read that book with my first child, so I don't remember everything (and I think I skimmed it in my sleep-deprived state), but I think it's more than just CIO.  I think it helps you to recognize your LO's sleep cues and helps you determine when you should be putting your baby down for naps and bedtime.  It does discuss "sleep training" your child but doing it in small intervals- letting them cry for 2 min, then going into soothe, leaving again for 4 min, returning to soothe, etc. but if I remember correctly, it states that sleep training shouldn't start until they're 4 or 5 months old?

     My daughter was sleeping 8-12 hours straight until just a couple weeks ago.  Now she's doing 5 hrs, then 3 hrs, then 2 hrs, so similar to your situation.  I'm attributing it to some sort of growth spurt and hoping that she'll resume her longer sleep schedule soon.

    This is what I got out of it too.  I have learned that DD will melt down if she is awake for more than two hours-pretty much exactly what the book says.  I keep an eye on the clock and we start winding it down for a nap once she is awake for 90 minutes even if she is happy.  It doesn't take long for her to go from happy and playing to fussy.  She is also ready for bed around 7:00 and even though it's a bummer to put her to bed that early, I know she needs it.  If she gets good sleep during the day, she doesn't fuss at all when it's time for bed.

    Since I believe she is too young for sleep training, we haven't utilized that part of the book yet.

  • All if what other pps said. Ferber's fix your child's sleep problems is the book that details the graduated CIO method. HSHHH is definitely worth the read even if CIO isn't for you.

  • I've been reading it this week and I actually think it's helped me get some of our nap issues figured out. I think there is a lot of good info in there, even if you don't utilize the CIO stuff. I'm hoping that our little guy napping better during the day helps the fact that he is still waking up 3-4 times each night. :/ Mama is so tired.
