Vacationing in DC with 3.5 yr old - suggestions for what to do??

DH has a work conference in DC for a week in early February and we are just making a vacation of it.  We will be staying on Arlington on a metro line, so basic DC area transportation should be relatively easy. I am looking for kid friendly suggestions of what to do. I know that we will do the basic stuff like the stuff on the mall but any other suggestions would be much appreciated. TIA

  • Museum of Natural History - I just found out that the live butterfly exhibit is free on Tuesdays (usually it's $6 a head).  Apparently if you get there right when the museum opens you can get a timed ticket.  Go see other stuff in the museum until your time comes up.

National Building museum has a "building zone" for kids.  I'll let someone else comment about that as I've never been there but I've heard good things.

If the weather turns weirdly warm one of the days you're here the National Zoo.  Same with the monuments - Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam, MLK, WWII, etc.  A great walk if it's not freezing cold outside.

Google the Smithsonian's Discovery Theater schedule and see what's playing the week you're here. Check the ages on the shows to see if there's one that's suitable.

I'll let others weigh in - there is some much to do around here - that's what came to mind for me.

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.

  • You can easily fill up a week with museum visits and the zoo! The Smithsonian museums and zoo are all free, though you do pay for things like Imax, etc. and food is VERY expensive and not very good, IMO. Even some of the museums that you might think would not be good for a 3.5 year old can be fun--American Art has an indoor area with some cool water sculpture, and the National Gallery has some good kid's programs as well.

Off the mall, DC has some wonderful parks and nature centers, though many of them require a car or a willingness to deal with DC's complicated bus system.

Also, check out the schedule of the Kennedy Center--they often have kid's music programs that are free or very low cost.
