PT: when to leave the house in only underwear?

So we're about 1 week into PT and she's only had 2 accidents - both poop. Which I know pooping on the potty is usually a hard thing! Yesterday, as soon as I put her in the car after daycare, she said she had to go potty. I told her she could hold it (she wears a pull up in the car) and we'd be home soon. It took about 20-30 min to get home (gotta love traffic), and she held it! Her Pull Up was completely dry...we ran to the potty and she went! She also woke up completely dry yesterday morning, went straight to the potty and went. And she even had a glass of milk just before bed b/c she's wearing diapers at night, and I figured once she was good during the day, we'd start making the night-time transition.

So my question is - should we start venturing out (malls, grocery, etc) without pull-ups? Or is 1 week just too soon for that? I just don't want to confuse her by putting pull ups on her when we go out. But today I have a lot of errands to run.

Thanks!

Re: PT: when to leave the house in only underwear?

  • We are just starting to think about PTing as my LO will be two in Feb.  A friend of mine told me what she did at first was put underwear on her LO and a pull up on top.  That way if he had an accident he felt it but the car, friend's houses etc.. were protected.

We did this too.  For a couple of weeks, we did the underwear with a pull-up on top when we went out.  She never had an accident that way.  I stressed the "you're wearing panties, trrry not to have an accident," and I even tried to slide the pullups on right along with her pants, trying not to make a big deal of them.  IMO, if your LO has been doing that week for a solid week, you could try leaving the house in underwear...and try the pull-ups on top during this transitional phase.  GL!

  • We started potty training on the spur of the moment because my dr. suggested it as the easiest way to deal with her diaper rash that we just couldn't beat...She peed in her diaper at the appointment, I took it off and never put another one on her.  So, my answer to the question is that you should leave the house in only underwear when you have a spare outfit or two with...

I figured, if DD peed in her carseat, I would grab a plastic grocery bag and put it between the wet padding and her and wash the seat  cover later.  Interestingly, DD always did best when we were out in public...

  • We went out to dinner and BBB last night and my DH put a pull up on her (forgot to tell him to just leave her in panties). So I never asked if she had to go, nothing. At BBB, she said "mommy, I have to go potty". We ran to the bathroom, pull-up was completely dry and she went!

I did buy the Summer Infant piddle pad (?) that goes in the carseat just in case of an accident, I have the Dora liners for the public toilets, and a Potette, just in case we're in the car and can't get to a public bathroom.

  • We did after 2-3 days.  He only had like 2 accidents in the first 5 days (and one was at home).  We have accidents when we forgot to go, so we just make sure to ask a lot when we are out and about (and at home, I guess).  We always have another outfit along.

  • there are seat protectors you can use in the carseat for those purposes. We have two (use one while washing the other) that we will use when we start potty training.
