baby so stuffy, just home from NICU

Hi ladies, I am having a FTM freak out! Thankfully my 2nd twin was released from NICU on Wednesday after 43 days. He has has a stuffy nose for the last 2 weeks but since coming home it is worse, especially at night, he is breathing shallow but his color is good, his tone is fine, he wakes to eat and eats nicely. We were supposed to go back to NICU today for a weigh in but we got snow and freezing rain over night. I am probably being paranoid but he is such a little guy (4lbs 11oz)!

  • That is pretty common, don't stress. Do you have a humudifier going?

  • Dont stress! My LO has a stuffy nose a lot too.. it is VERY normal... I would be more concerned if it was runny then stuffy.. The winter dry air plus the fact that they cant blow their own noses makes them stuff up easily.  I asked my pedi about that and sneezing and she said it is normal and ok and to let her know if it starts to become runny they it is more of a concern

  • Second vote for a humidifier here!! Ours ran 24/7 in their room the first month or two and it made a huge difference.

  • Very common! My LO sounded like a pug in the beginning. I love my nose frida. When I see big boogers up there I'm usually able to get them out and he sounds better. It's probably not necessary though, just makes me feel better.

  • I agree, humidifier and the nosefrida!  If you put a few drops of saline in your LOs nose (let it sit for like 10 seconds) and then suck their nose.  You'll get a lot more out that way.

  • Thanks ladies, it is so good to know it is common, I spent all night holding him and worrying with more tears than I care to admit to. He is so lkttle and it pains me that after all he has been through he now has this to deal with! I did run the humidifier last night but he didn't sleep in his room because his crying kept waking up his brother. He will sleep with it tonight for sure even if the 2 of use sleep on the floor in the office! Thanks so very much for your replies!

  • sounds normal as long as there no other signs of sickness (fever, etc.). Definitely try the humidifier at night. Also, saline drops help a lot!

  • Also try propping up the matress of his crib along with the humidifier.

My pedi said that unless LO's nose is running to not suction it. If its congestion that's higher up, the suction likely won't get it and can damage the nasal passages and cause more problems.
