SUV owners w/ 2+ kids: What do you drive?

We are on the market for an SUV that can comfortably accommodate two car seats. If you can recommend or "de-recommend" a vehicle I would greatly appreciate it.

We are looking at the Nissan Murano, Toyota Highlander, Volvo XC90, Hyundai Santa Fe.

Please share, we're open to suggestions. Thanks!

  • My friend with twins has a Nissan Murano and can fit two car seats comfortably in the back seat.

I have a Ford Escape and can also fit 2-3 car seats in my back seat.

The Toyota Highlander is great, BUT the middle seat is hardly a seat at all so if you are looking to eventually add a third child, you might have issues down the road trying to get three across.

  • My Chevy Tahoe is the perfect size for two kids.  For three, we'll be moving up to the Chevy Suburban.

I had the Toyota Highlander with just one kid.  It was great for one, but (imo) a little small for two car seats and a double stroller - we wouldn't have had much room left over at all.   Plus, as the PP said, the middle seat was tiny.  I'm petite and it would've been a squeeze to sit back there between 2 car seats.

  • I drive a Ford Explorer, with a third row seat. I can easily fit all three kids in the middle seat, but when LO arrives we will be putting the older two kids in the third row, and unfortunately won't have much cargo space in the rear then. Sorry- not much help!

  • OH! I was just looking at your choices again and my mom drives a Sata Fe and has no trouble fitting two car seats in!

  • We have a GMC Acadia and LOVE it.  I highly recommend it.  We're on baby #3 and needed 3 rows.  The Acadia also had a lot of extras that we wanted (bucket seats in the middle row, easy to fold back row, 4x4, 2 sun roofs, etc).  We've had it for about 9 months or so now and it is the best thing to drive!

  • Just for another option look at the Subaru Outback.  This is our first pregnancy, but my friends have put their kids in our outback with no issues!  I looked at similar vehicles from all the companies you mentioned, and the Subaru was much better quality for the money and gets significantly better gas mileage.  The all wheel drive is awesome too.

  • I drive a Honda Pilot and it fits 8.  My husband who is a big guy can sit between the 2 carseats in the middle row.  It can fit 3 across in the middle very comfortable.
  • I have a '10 Subaru Forester and love it. Plenty of room for 2 carseats and still a lot of trunk space. DH is tall so it was important that the carseats could rear face and still have a lot of leg room for him in the driver or passenger seats. Some SUV's didn't have as much leg room it seemed once we put the Britax in RF'ing. We also live in the mountains so we get a lot of snow which Subaru's are great in. (Not sure where you live.)

Also, everyone I know with a Highlander loves them.

  • We only have one kid right now, but we have 2 dogs that we take with us a lot of places.  We have a Nissan Xterra and so far lots of room with 1 baby, 1 medium size dog and 1 giant breed (great dane).  We will have no problem with space once #2 gets here.

  • I have a Nissan Murano and love it. You can easily fit two car seats but it doesn't have room to grow from there. We're having twins in August and will have to buy something else to accomadate 3 car seats!

  • We have a Ford Expedition and I love it....we usually keep the 3rd row down for more storage for grocery shopping etc but once this little one arrives we will put my oldest in the 3rd row just so all 3 arent squished and the boys arent all up in the babys face all the time.

  • I absolutely love my highlander and it is a great vehicle, but like pp mentioned the middle seat is really small. It will work for 2 kids but we will definitely need something bigger when we decide to have another child.

  • We have a Highlander, and it's fine for two carseats, but we are going to have a problem when #3 gets here - we can't fit 3 carseats in the second row, and the third row doesn't have any tethers, plus there would be no trunk space.  We'll have to start looking for a minivan (cringe!).

  • We have a Honda Pilot.  Love it!  If you plan on having any more kids, you'll have plenty of room for 3 carseats too.  Plus there's a 3rd row seat in case you want to have others ride along!

If you're stopping at two, then I would recommend the Honda CRV, the Toyota Highlander, and the Mazda CX7.
