Ladies who have delivered at Bellevue

Thanks to many excellent recommendations for Dr. Sattars practice, I am highly considering a switch to them, and they deliver at Bellevue. (I delivered my daughter at St Peters). I've been to Bellevue once for a surgery and thought the OR I was in was a bit sketchy (but then again they started my drugs before they wheeled me in), but I have always heard good things about them.

I'd love to hear about your experiences, both good and bad.

ETA: I know you can labor in the tubs there, but can you deliver in the water? Also, is there enough tubs for everyone or is there a chance you wont get one?

Re: Ladies who have delivered at Bellevue

  • I didn't deliver there, but I had a D&C there.  It was a pretty good experience, and I had a lot of people recommend Bellevue to me, but I wanted the NICU at Albany Med.

I have heard it has gone downhill a little, something about accepting too many patients because of insurance, but don't take my word for it.  Plus I'm sure the Drs and staff are just as good, regardless of patients.  I think it just means you are less likely to get your own room.

  • I had a D&C there, and also delivered there in 2/09. I'll deliver there again in May or June.

I had a great experience all around. Fabulous nurses and lactation consultants. Even the food was good.  I really don't have anything to complain about. I did have a roommate my 1st night there and then had my own room the 2nd night. The room mate situation kinda sucked, but I delivered late in the evening so we only shared a room for about 12 hours.  It is what it is.

As for the labor rooms, at that time there was only 1 delivery room with a tub. I'm not sure how it is now.  I went into labor at a very busy time at the hospital and got the only delivery room left. Everything was filled. So I can't speak much about the tub since I did not get one.

    I hope this helps!

  • Hi! Me again! :)

I had my LAP there in Dec 2009 and it was a great experience. I brought my friend for a LAP in August and also had great experience. We have IF issues, hence the LAP's.

Dr. Sattars office is the only office that delivers at Bellevue that is a OB/MW practice. They are also the only practice that pretty much has consistent non-medicated births. The tub room is typically "reserved" for them. Like if 5 women from different practices come in, want drugs, they will be put in other labor rooms and that one is used as a last resort. So said my MW. It's nice because it's a great option if you want to labor without drugs. They put it on my chart that I would like the tub room and as soon as I go into labor I will call, even though I will labor at home for as long as I can, so they can reserve that room for me. I told my MW I would have a pregnant beat down if there were open rooms and some other lady in labor was hooked up to her bed to drugs in the tub room. I feel very strongly about being in the tub. :)

I'm not sure if you can deliver in there. I didn't ask. I just want to be able to labor in it.

  • Thank you all for your helpful answers. Sorry to hear some of you have also had issues TTC or with losses. I feel for ya :(

SeptemberBride- that is awesome info and a great reason to choose his practice! If we go meet with him, I will ask him that specifically. I would assume they don't allow water births, but it is worth asking.  Thanks for yet another helpful answer!

To the ladies who have also had surgeries there (I had an operative hysteroscopy there due to retained products of conception after a loss)- was the OR tiny and filled with stuff? Or was I just delusional? They gave me my midazolam before I got rolled down, so I was a little foggy, but I swear it was just tiny and cramped in there!

  • I don't remember much of the OR. They gave me a sedative before they took me in and I was out during the process. I don't think it was very big though. But I don't have much to go by, it was pretty much the 1st time I had been in an operating room and it was in 2008......:)

  • I had a good experience at Bellevue. I got lucky with the roommate situation. I had a roommate maybe 20 minutes. She was leaving while I was coming in. I can't imagine having to share a room in that hospital. It is pretty tiny in there and now that Bellevue is the only hospital in Schenectady that has a delivery ward, the chances of having a roommate are much more likely.

I will say that all the nurses I had were excellent! They were very sweet and one who helped deliver my daughter came to visit before we had left. The only 2 bad things I will say is that they were pretty bad about coming in all throughout the night to check on both the baby and I. With my first delivery they would come in to look at both of us at the same time but here I felt like there was constantly someone in our room.

And the worst for me because I was STARVING was the food situation. They don't have a cafeteria on premise so there was no way of getting food outside of my 3 meals other than having to have someone go get it. And the meals weren't good at all. I was alone the second night because my dh was with dd#1 and was seriously going to ask if I could get a pizza delivered. There was nothing there.

So in terms of care, it was awesome and I felt super comfortable. But it was the little things for me that made me a little disappointed in my stay.

  • I had a non-pregnancy related surgery there in 1998 and had a scheduled c-section there in 2010.  Both times, I had good experiences.  I didn't have any issues with the OR and wasn't sedated when I went it.  (I was not able to keep my glasses on and am blind without them, but I didn't notice or sense anything being off).  From what I remember on the tour, there is only 1 room with a tub for laboring, but I don't think they will let you deliver in it.

They are currently undergoing a huge remodel, scheduled to be done 9/2013 and the majority of the rooms will then be private.  I agree w/ NYmama2, they did come in a lot at night, but everyone was very helpful and there was only 1 nurse whose opinion differed from mine (I wanted DS to stay in the room w/ me, she didn't understand why).  I was fortunate to not have a roommate the first 2 nights, but did have one on the last night and it can get very crowded in those rooms.  They do try their best to keep 1 family per room, though.  There is only 1 rocking chair per room.

I've heard people on both sides of the fence about Bellevue, but I liked it there.  I'm even thinking about switching MD's if we have another baby and would look for one with privileges there.  There are 4 hospitals closer to me, too.  Sorry this was so long, good luck!

  • I can't say enough good things about Dr. Sattar's practice. Although I've only seen him a few times (my DD was breach until about 39 weeks so I had to meet with him to discuss my options since his MWs don't do breach delivery), the midwives are wonderful.

I found Bellevue to be okay. It's definitely not amazing but I didn't have any major issues. I found the labor/delivery rooms to be spacious and very clean. The bathroom in my recovery room, on the other hand, could have used a good scrubbing. I was glad I brought flip-flops. I was lucky in that I didn't have a roommate at any point. I think that would've sucked. The nurses were fantastic. I honestly didn't eat the food so I can't tell you how that was. If you ask at the nurses station, they will give you a binder of menus for places that deliver to the hospital.

When I delivered DD (last May), only one labor/delivery room had a tub. And I called ahead and requested that room but still didn't get it so I would make sure you are okay with the possibility of not getting a tub. I was pretty bummed at first but my room had a large shower and my labor went so fast that I probably wouldn't have had time to use the tub anyway.
