Red Raspberry Leaf Tea?

Are any of you drinking this? If so, how much/how often?

I was reading on another board that it doesn't cause labor, it "tones" the uterus? Which can possibly make labor go faster and help heal faster?

Wondering if there is any truth to this and if I should start drinking some- or is it too late to get the benefits? I don't know how long you are supposed to drink it for for it to help.

Re: Red Raspberry Leaf Tea?

  • I drank it everyday from 38 to 40 weeks.  At 40 weeks 2 days I went into labor, it was 14hrs (which is actually fairly short) completely unmedicated.  Maybe it helped... who knows!  But, if you enjoy having a cup of tea at night, why not?

  • My midwife had me start drinking it at 36 weeks, 2 glasses a day. She said it helps make contractions more effective and from the research I've been doing, it also helps the uterus recover more quickly after labor. Make sure you get raspberry leaf tea and not raspberry tea. I found it in the Health Food section in the grocery store. I don't like hot tea, so I made a pitcher for the fridge. Go for it!!

  • I've been drinking it since about 32 weeks. I drink one 10 oz cup a day. Like PP said, make sure you buy red raspberry leaf tea, not just raspeberry flavored tea. I get it in the organic section at my grocery store.

  • If you're not an herbal tea person you may not like it, but I really like it and have been drinking a lot of it (3-4 cups a day) since the end of Tri2. My midwife is fine with me taking it, but she didn't promise me any miracles. If there's a remote chance of it helping with labor (toning etc) AND I like it then I figure- why not. I'd +1 what the PP said- make sure it's raspberry LEAF tea and not just raspberry flavored tea.

  • I don't know if it actually works, I tried it with my first though.

It's on the list of do not eat/do not drink my OB hands out, until 37 weeks.

  • Last week my midwife suggested that I start drinking it.  She said if I like it to drink as much as I want.  I think it's pretty good so sometimes I replace some of my water with that.

  • It's not too late to get the benefits, just drink it everyday since it's more of a tonic in the sense that one serving won't benefit you, the continued use will.

I have been drinking it since about 28 weeks and I'm up to a quart a day.  I make it into an infusion.  I basically have a 1/2 gallon size jar, I put in about a cup worth of loose leaf tea and pour on boiling water, cover and let steep overnight.  Then the next day I put it into the fridge and strain and drink.  I like it cold like another person said, it really is tasty.

  • I just bought some today and have been doing some research on it before I started it. Looks like it is safe and can only benefit our labor so why not. I am going to start drinking it twice a day. Just made some and it smells like normal herbal tea but a little bitter, so I added some agave nectar.
