Baby Names

How would you pronounce Raya?

Rae-uh or Rye-uh?

Would it make a difference if the child was half-Indian, with an Indian last name?

It's apparently a Hebrew-derived name and also, less often, an Arabic-derived name.  But it's unclear to me how it is pronounced from the websites I've read, plus I'm curious what would happen to the name IRL.  I think I like it, but I'm also pronouncing it Rye-uh in my head.

Re: How would you pronounce Raya?

  • I would pronounce it "Rae-uh."

  • I would probably say Rae-uh just because it sounds more like a name than Rye-uh. That said, I pronounce Maya as Mye-uh so who knows.

  • Upon first glance I said Rae-uh.

  • Thanks everyone for the responses -- looks like it's fairly evenly split, so I guess the one thing I know is that she'll have to correct people one way or the other ...

This is particularly helpful.  DH's family speaks Arabic, which is why we are interested in Arabic-derived names.  Sounds like the Arabic version is likely the pronunciation I like.  (I know I could just ask DH's parents, but we're trying to get a good list going/decisions made before we involve them.)

  • Its one of my favorite Arabic girls names...rye-uh.  I LOVE IT.  It would have been a middle name if one of our twins was a girl.  Arabic boy names are so much harder!

I also like Aya (eye-uh) if you want another suggestion :)
