I just had a nasty call with whoever is the payments person at S e t o n Main (Br i ttney something). She kept telling me what my estimated payment will be for delivery at the hospital & was asking me to prepay ... I said no. She goes on to tell me that I will have to pay 25% before I leave the hospital no matter what. Is this new? It really pissed me off because I've already prepayed my OB and that included my deductable and Seton has included my deductable in their estimate.
Can someone tell me what they did? Did you pay the 25% before leaving the hospital or did you wait until you got home? We have $ set aside in our FSA acct but I don't want to overpay for something before it gets billed to my insurance policy.
TIA!
Re: Remind me: S e t o n
I'm delivering at SSW and I haven't heard a thing from them since I sent in the preregistration info. I'd stand my ground and tell them you want to see an EOB from your insurance provider before you pay anything. Remember--they cannot refuse to treat you because you didn't prepay and they cannot refuse to discharge you for requesting that bills be sent to your insurance. I think they tell the billing folks to be as pushy as they can because they know certain people will just give in.
As for the FSA thing, I had to request a couple different itemized receipts from S eton before my FSA would reimburse me. If you get rejected by your FSA just call the hospital and ask for a more detailed bill.

"...and that's when they attacked." That cracked me up, Sinafey.
I think we have the same doctor (O l i v e r). I did the pre-registration and never got called to pay anything. they did ask us to pay before we left when we were being discharged and we did. Haven't seen or heard anything from them since. I may be different because on my insurance the birth of a child in a set price. We knew we were going to have to pay it so we just did.
I definitely would not pay anything before I am even admitted to the hospital. Like PP said, it's not like they are going to refuse to treat you.
I just had my baby 20 days ago at Seton Main, so I just went through this.
They called me about a month before my due date demanding a 25% payment. I asked to speak to a supervisor and have them send me their paperwork before I paid anything. Once I got the paperwork in the mail I just ignored it.
When I was in the hospital I never heard a peep about the 25% payment. I am waiting for my insurance to pay before I pay Seton. I want everything to match up.

If you know you will owe based on your insurance, you could offer to pay them something and that will get them off your back.
The registration people where I work (ER) do get ranked on their ability to get co-pays from patients. It's part of their job peformance review. It's an extra incentive to ask and be... aggressive/pushy or whatever you want to call it. Even not-for-profit hospitals have to have money to keep the lights on and every penny counts. Some people will only ever give you the $50-100 you ask right then and there for it. Many will never pay a dime. Just show them a good faith effort to make good on paying for the services you will recieve and that will meet the requirements of their job and make them happy.
