3rd Trimester

Ambien in 3rd Tri?

So, I let my Dr, know that I've been logging in about 2 hours of sleep a night and since my 3 yr old quit napping, naps for me have flown out the window.

She wrote me a script for Ambien, just 10 pills, to be used sparingly of course, but I'm still kind of nervous about taking them. I'm probably going to try tonight though, since I'm so exhausted and I don't actually have to be conscious tomorrow, since it's the weekend.

I'm a nurse, and I know all the crazy side effects people can have with ambien, so no need to tell me horror stories...lol.

Just wondering if a sleeping aid gave any of us 3rd tris some relief.

TIA

  • I haven't used any..honestly as little sleep as I get these days I wouldn't take Ambien, but that;s just my opinion

  • I occasionally take a benadryl or Tylenol PM, I used to take ambien (pre-pregnancy), and it worked great for me.  Just go right to bed after taking it, you wouldn't want to get dizzy and fall or something.

  • Ambien is some crazy stuff. I have someone or two in the family with a sleeping pill problem so I won't touch the stuff ever. But I know you need sleep. Try it tonight and see what happens but make sure SO is ready! =) Personally I would try other methods but what do you think is causing your insomnia?

  • I also asked my dr. about sleeping and she said they could do the same with ambien or I could do benydrl. I decided to opt for the benydrl, but if things get worse I would probably ask for the ambien as well.

  • I occasionally take Unisom for sleep.
  • I can't take benadryl or anything with it in it. like tylenol PM.... It gives me crazy RLS.... and makes me hyper.

My insomnia is pretty much from being a fat uncomfortable preggo lady....lol.  I just can't get comfy enough to sleep.  Or I wake up at 12 and can't get back.  I used to work night shift, so I'm no stranger to sleep deprivation, but my tank is pretty empty at this point.

  • I've taken Unisom, but I know at least 1 person who was given Ambien while in the hospital in labor to help her sleep. I don't think your OB would prescribe anything dangerous to you.

  • I dislike Ambien.  I have a sleep disorder and am more awake when I take Ambien than without it.  I also have friends who have driven, cooked, etc while taking it.  They offered it to me in the hospital during my induction and I declined.

  • I took Ambien for years and a half pill was all I needed, even after taking it for so long.  It is in the same category as Unisom if I am not mistaken and relatively safe, especially in the third trimester.

I personally avoided it during pregnancy and will continue to do so because of the side effects.  I took Unisom while pregnant, which didn't make me tired, but when I lay down I was able to fall asleep.  Ambien made me stay up high for a few hours while cooking, eating, typing weird things on my FB, etc.  Once I fell asleep cooking something and the dog barking woke up my husband.  I was sitting on the kitchen floor sleeping and the food was smoking.  When I got up I tripped on a blanket I had wrapped around me and fell on my face.

So, I have decided it would be too dangerous for me while pregnant or with an infant because of how I react to it.  Just lay down immediately, before your husband, and have him make sure you don't get up.  Once you fall asleep, you should stay asleep.

  • I took Ambien before pregnancy, and my doctor told me it was fine to take it occasionally during pregnancy as well.  I've never had any sort of weird side effects.  I would never try to cook or anything after taking it, I'd take it and then immediately get in bed. It's safe in pregnancy so you might as well give it a shot and see if it helps!

  • i was on ambien most of last year and it took me forever to get off of it. the withdrawl from it was bad, yay for addiction. i could share a few horror stories that happened while i was on it, yet at the same time i loved it because i slept so sound. i dont think i would use it again after having LO because i'd be scared that i would do something that could harm her, because on ambien nothing was ever what it actually was, and anything on tv scared me.

  • Ambien has been amazing for me, but everyone reacts differently. I took it 2-3x/month pre-pg, and so far I've taken it 5 times during pg (always half a pill) and I'm at 29 weeks. I've never had a weird reaction - it puts me to sleep quickly, I don't sleepwalk or anything, and I wake up feeling well-rested. I agree with pp that your doctor wouldn't prescribe it if it wasn't safe. Use it when you need it and have your DH keep an eye on you for weird reactions, including dependency. I hope you can get some sleep!

  • My advice, would be to avoid taking Ambien or Benadryl (Benadryl is ok until the 3rd trimester) Watching "A Baby Story" I saw several moms given Ambien to get a good night's sleep, so I was curious & wanted to see if that is something I would take if offered to me. After looking into references on both, I wouldn't take them myself at this point. The Ambien can have an effect on the baby for sure. Benadryl is not recommended in the 3rd trimester because infants are for some reason prone to seizure reactions from the med. That said, I am a pharmacist & pretty picky about what I take.

  • I would have lost the little bit of sanity I have left without ambien. I haven't gotten more than 4 hrs of sleep without it since about 20-25 weeks. I only take it when I don't have to be up for anything in the morning so twice a week but getting 2 full nights is so helpful!!
