Hi ladies, I have lurked on this board for quite sometime. I'm hoping you can help me out with a baby food question. I currently EBF and my son is 4.5 months old. I went to the Dr. Today and he is suggesting that I should start solids with brown rice. My son is also a big boy weighing in at 17 lbs. the dr. also mentioned that my milk will not keep him satisfied soon.
My question is do I start feeding him or wait? My preference is to wait until he's 6 months. Also, I'm not sure I want to feed him rice cereal, can't I just start on avocados?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I read a recent (12/21/2011) CME article titled "No Benefit of Additional Foods, Fluids in Breast-Fed Infants" by Laurie Barclay, MD.
It was a review of several studies that concluded that:
? current research supports the World Health Organization's recommendation for exclusive breast feeding for the first 6 months after birth
? for infants 4 to 6 months old, there was no detectable benefit from additional foods nor any detectable risks related to morbidity or weight change.
? introducing supplemental food or fluids before 5 months may result in shorter duration of breast-feeding.
I have [had?] a big baby, too. Always between 80th-90th percentile. His first food was avocado mixed with olive oil and nutritional yeast around 6.5 months. That is when I felt he was ready. He was EBF before that and is still mostly just nursing and snacking on solids.
There is no need for rice cereal, and your baby will be ready when he is ready. Not simply because he is on the larger side and 4 months old. If he seems hungry let him nurse more. They have growth spurts and if it seems like you don't have enough milk, let him comfort nurse more and your production should catch up.
When you feel he is ready for solids don't be afraid to give him actual food [avocado, sweet potatoes, greek yoghurt, etc.] instead of rice cereal. We did give our son a little organic brown rice cereal at 5 months to help with reflux, but it wasn't helping and he had a bad reaction to it [horrid diaper rash] so we stopped.
GL!
Thanks ladies, much appreciated. I think I'm going to hold off until he's 6 months as there really is no benefit starting before then.
Agreed. My BFing book questioned why you would take anything that is nutritionally perfect and replace it with something that is not. That was enough to make me hold off until 6 months.
