Remind me: S e t o n

I just had a nasty call with whoever is the payments person at S e t o n  Main (Br i ttney something).  She kept telling me what my estimated payment will be for delivery at the hospital & was asking me to prepay ... I said no.  She goes on to tell me that I will have to pay 25% before I leave the hospital no matter what.  Is this new?  It really pissed me off because I've already prepayed my OB and that included my deductable and Seton has included my deductable in their estimate.

Can someone tell me what they did?  Did you pay the 25% before leaving the hospital or did you wait until you got home?  We have $ set aside in our FSA acct but I don't want to overpay for something before it gets billed to my insurance policy.

TIA!

  • I had DS in 2010 so the policy may have changed.  I don't remember Seton ever asking me for payment.  I'd stand my ground and tell them that you'll be paying them once they send you a bill after DC is born.  What are they going to do if you don't pay the 25%?  Keep you and DC on lockdown until you do?

  • I had DD in 2011 and also refused to prepay.  I did pay 25% before I was discharged, but was sad I did because the "receipt" they gave me was refused by my FSA provider.  With DS#2 they refused to give me his birth certificate because I didn't pay anything before I left but since it wasn't an official copy I wasn't too concerned.  I just got it from the vital stats office later.

  • I'm delivering at SSW and I haven't heard a thing from them since I sent in the preregistration info.  I'd stand my ground and tell them you want to see an EOB from your insurance provider before you pay anything.  Remember--they cannot refuse to treat you because you didn't prepay and they cannot refuse to discharge you for requesting that bills be sent to your insurance.  I think they tell the billing folks to be as pushy as they can because they know certain people will just give in.

As for the FSA thing, I had to request a couple different itemized receipts from S eton before my FSA would reimburse me.  If you get rejected by your FSA just call the hospital and ask for a more detailed bill.

  • I swear the billing people get a commission if they can get you to pay.  We didn't prepay before DS in 08, and we also refused to pay the pushy woman who came to our room the day before discharge.  I wanted to wait until it had all gone through insurance.

  • Like PP's said just stand your ground.  They were hella pushy with me while I was still drugged and loopy, but she backed down when I told her I refused to pay anything until I had EOB from insurance.  I think they may have even waited for DH to leave because he only left once in 5 days and that's when they attacked.

  • "...and that's when they attacked."  That cracked me up, Sinafey.

I think we have the same doctor (O l i v e r).  I did the pre-registration and never got called to pay anything.  they did ask us to pay before we left when we were being discharged and we did.  Haven't seen or heard anything from them since.  I may be different because on my insurance the birth of a child in a set price.  We knew we were going to have to pay it so we just did.

I definitely would not pay anything before I am even admitted to the hospital.  Like PP said, it's not like they are going to refuse to treat you.

  • I just had my baby 20 days ago at Seton Main, so I just went through this.

They called me about a month before my due date demanding a 25% payment.  I asked to speak to a supervisor and have them send me their paperwork before I paid anything.  Once I got the paperwork in the mail I just ignored it.

When I was in the hospital I never heard a peep about the 25% payment.  I am waiting for my insurance to pay before I pay Seton.  I want everything to match up.

  • I delivered at seton and was obviously so early I hadn't prepaid.  We left the hospital with a waive and a hug.  We got bills saying we owed nothign for about a month and then a letter saying you owe xyz.  That was what my insurance said I owed too so we paid that.  I think we're square. • I just was released from S e t o n Central (not for a baby but back surgery) and they wanted me to pay at my pre-op admissions and I said that our insurance policy specifically tells us not to pre-pay and they payment counselor said that our insurance needs to call them to tell them to stop asking for pre-payment then. She wasn't rude about it but I could tell she was annoyed but she didn't get any money from me then or before I was dismissed. They can't force you to pay the 25%.
  • I delivered at Seton in Kyle and didn't prepay

  • I delivered at SNW. I didn't pay anything before I left and received a bill. I know that you can also do payment plans. I would ask to talk to their supervisor or something. They can't hold you there

  • If you know you will owe based on your insurance, you could offer to pay them something and that will get them off your back.

The registration people where I work (ER) do get ranked on their ability to get co-pays from patients. It's part of their job peformance review. It's an extra incentive to ask and be... aggressive/pushy or whatever you want to call it. Even not-for-profit hospitals have to have money to keep the lights on and every penny counts. Some people will only ever give you the $50-100 you ask right then and there for it. Many will never pay a dime. Just show them a good faith effort to make good on paying for the services you will recieve and that will meet the requirements of their job and make them happy.

  • i delivered at central, and they did call for prepayment, but i told them i planned to pay with my FSA. the person on the phone said that i would have to pre-pay services when i checked in - but they never asked for that when we arrived. someone visited my room on the 2nd day to square away payment. thankfully, it matched up with the EOB later, but i probably should have asked to get billed later.
  • I has DS at Seton main at the end of Sept 2011. They tried to get me to prepay too. I also told her no and did not pay anything until after discharge when the bills started rolling in. I think they'd like for you to pay but you don't have to.
