1st Trimester

Ultrasound today....no heart beat :(

I needed to share this with someone and since I haven't told anyone I am pregnant yet, I am going to get it out here...

Today was my first ultrasound.  I knew something was up when the tech said she needed to do an interal to get a better look.  She said that my dates may be off.  My last period was November 16.  According to the calculators and my doctor, I should be 9 weeks, 1 day today.  Upon doing an internal, the doctor said I may only be 6 weeks, but no heart beat is showing yet.  He thinks maybe my dates are off...  The tech did think she saw a small glimmer of a heart beat, but the doctor was not convinced and thought it was just mine coming through.

So, we have to wait a week and go back for another ultrasound to see if any growth has been made and if a heart beat can be detected.  The doctor said with the kind of ultrasound technology he uses, you should be able to see the heart beat at 5 1/2 to 6 weeks.

I have had no spotting, bleeding, cramping, etc.  So, I guess we are just going to have to wait it out a week and see what happens.  I am trying to be optomistic, but it's kinda hard...

If anyone has had a D/C what is the recovery time with that procedure?  The doctor also mentioned taking something by mouth to help pass?

Off to google now.  Thanks for letting me get this out.

Re: Ultrasound today....no heart beat :(

  • I'm sorry you are going through this. Are you sure when you ovulated? It's possible the dates are just off. How long ago did you get a BFP?

I've had 2 D&C's. The physical recovery is very fast - you really only need a day after the procedure to pull yourself together. They put me in twilight sleep so it was easy to come out of the anesthesia and I had very little bleeding or cramping following the procedure. Mentally, of course, is another story. I took a few days off of work and a weekend before I was ready to face the world.

I can't comment on the meds to help you pass this on your own - I was farther along than you so my doctor felt the D&C was preferable, plus we were then able to test the tissue and try to determine the cause of the m/c. I wouldn't do anything, though, until you've had the f/u ultrasound.

Best wishes to you for good news or for a speedy recovery.

I got my period 3 days earlier than expected in November.  I got my BFP on December 13th.  DH and I went on our anniversary trip November 27 and 28, which is where I *thought* we conceived.

I have been trying to count and figure out these dates...will just have to wait and see.

Thanks for the info on the d/c.

  • I measured 3 weeks behind at my first ultrasound. A week later, there was a strong heartbeat!

Fingers crossed that everything works out for you! (And stay away from Google, it will do nothing but frustrate/scare you!)

Don't lose hope!  Ignore your last period for a sec and focus on the BFP.  You got that on the 13th so let's assume you conceived about two weeks before that.  That would make you just over 7 weeks now but we're assuming lots of things that could make you close a week earlier than that.  I got my BFP less than two weeks after I conceived, making me 3wks and some odd days and would be really close to what you are.

  • I'm so sorry.  This is a horrible thing for anyone to have to go through.  I will be sending T&P's your way.

  • Hang in there. I won't tell you not to worry, because I'm a worrywart myself and I know I would too, but if there's some hope and logical posibility, just hold on to it.

  • I had my first ultrasound today too and my LMP was Nov. 16th. I measured 6w2d. We saw the heartbeat fluttering like crazy but she couldn't get a good measurement so I am going back in next week. I got my BFP on Jan. 2. My cycles vary from 35-45 days though. If you have longer cycles, that could be the reason.

Hopefully you won't need this info, but I had a D&C a few years ago for a blighted ovum. Recovery wasn't long; I was back at work two days later. I also took methotrexate (sp?) vaginally a week before the D&C to see if that would make me miscarry without the D&C. It didn't work completely so that's why I had to have the D&C.

I hope things work out for you!

  • I am so very sorry for what you're going through.  I'll cross my fingers that it's just a mixup with the dates and next week brings better news.

In case it does not...yes, I've had 2 D&Cs.  Honestly, I think they're the "best" way to go if your body isn't going to handle that process naturally.  My first m/c was a missed m/c at 10 weeks (baby stopped growing at 8).  I had a d&c the day after we found out there wasn't a h/b.  It was quick and painless and I was ready to go home after about an hour.  With my 2nd m/c, I started bleeding at 8w and wanted to wait it out and let my body pass the pregnancy naturally. It just went on and on and on for weeks, and really, it was more than I could handle to see all of that.  Not to mention the physical pain.  I switched to a new OB and he all but demanded I get a d&c so I could begin healing and moving towards ttc again.  Big hugs to you.

  • I am sorry you have to go through this, but I had a similar situation with DD.  I should have been about 9 weeks pregnant, and nothing showed on the u/s ( I was bleeding so I had to have an emergency one) So they did a transvaginal one.  I was only measuring 5 weeks something.  I had my BFP at least 3 weeks before this. Now we did have a h/b, but the ultrasound tech said that I was so early that there wouldn't necessarily be one.

    Don't give up hope!

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this.  I went through a similar experience. Hopefully you will find a heartbeat next week.

If it's not good news, and if you need a D & C, just know that it is not a bad procedure at all.  It took about 30 minutes.  I rested the rest of the day and didn't lift or do any strenous exercise for  a few days.  I had to wear a thin pad or pantiliner for a week.

((big hugs)) Hoping for the best for you.

  • I had a D & C on a Friday night, and was driving to the Keys that evening...well, being driven.  I went snorkeling and camping that weekend.  I think I took the super ibuprofen once.  However, I am a quick healer and hard to keep down.

Like the previous posters, I won't tell you not to worry -- but there are a lot of positive outcomes from situations like yours.  Personally, I didn't have a positive turnout.  I was having a lot of discomfort after our surprise BFP last year, and since I had a previous ectopic had several ultrasounds.  The first at 4.5 weeks, and they saw a sac but no fetal pole, then the next week, one empty sac and a sac with a flicker, but not very strong, and the week after that there was no development.  We gave it one more week, but still no heart beat...so I had the D & C.  I still had mild nausea and hormone dips and sore boobs because our bodies hold on to the pregnancy hormones for so long...my issue was Thyroid related, and luckily I have that all straightened out now.

If I were you, I would focus on the positive stories every one was posting, and stay calm.  Surprises happen!   Sending positive vibes your way!
