Re: Vacation GTKY
1) Is there a place you vacation or weekend again and again? What keeps you going back? No, not really. Honestly, vacations just are starting to become enjoyable again. Traveling with 2 babies/toddlers/preschoolers isn't really a vacation.
2) Did you travel or vacation a lot as a kid?We visited grandparents in Maine and in FL and typically drove. So we did a lot of east coast vacations (stopping along the way in NYC, Boston, etc.) We did one big Cali vacation when I was 13y.
3) Your best vacation ever was...I am not sure. L and I didn't vacation much before kids because of school and we didn't think we had the money and then see #1 for post-kids. We went to Gatlinburg, TN last summer and rented an awesome condo with a pool, playground, and game room - plus the activities in the area. It was a nice mix of low-key and active. And L and I went to Disney with friends pre-kids and had a blast.
4) What's on your dream life list of places to visit? If you have a "we will make this happen" list and a "won the lottery" list, feel free to distinguish. Will make it happen - Ireland (L has always dreamed of going), Italy (I really want to go), Disney (I am a Disney freak and can't wait to take the kids), Cruise (probably north vs the Caribbean - we've talked about doing this post-PhD.) California (to see friends.) Won the Lottery - Travel around the world with a tutor/nanny for the kids.
5) Where do you plan to go next, and when? We need to go see L's family in TN (thought I am not sure that is a vacation.) We don't know where we are going to go for our summer vacation yet. I am looking at NH or Maine - but then my father has said he will come stay with us. Uh....
6) If traveling is more important to you than your partner (or vice-versa), how do you compromise to keep both of you happy? It isn't terribly important to us - but I do think we need to do it more - for relaxation/change of pace and educational opportunities for the kids. We just feel like we don't have the money to do it.
7) Have any favorite vacation money-saving tips to share? I am always hunting for discount codes for things. Last year I got us a rental car (VW Jetta) for $10/day. Score.
1) Is there a place you vacation or weekend again and again? What keeps you going back?
No, but I really want to find one once we move. Something low-key - a cabin or a family camp type thing, on a lake, and a place where we could include my parents and siblings sometimes.
2) Did you travel or vacation a lot as a kid?
Not at all - most of our family lived in the same town. I remember a total of 3 trips in 18 years with my parents. I was very fortunate in high school and friends often invited me to the lake or skiing, etc. with them (and their parents paid, which seems crazy to me now!).
3) Your best vacation ever was...
New Zealand, hands down. I still can't believe how lucky we got with the weather, etc.
4) What's on your dream life list of places to visit? If you have a "we will make this happen" list and a "won the lottery" list, feel free to distinguish.
Will make this happen - Scandinavia, Prince Edward Island, Hawaii, Spain, Ireland/Wales, Greece, a cruise, Wisconsin/Door County, weekend in Chicago, Vancouver, Montana
Would love to, but $$ and not top priority - Australia, Japan, Turkey
Lottery - Round-the-world cruise, guided tour of China, several weeks in rural France, I'll stop there...
5) Where do you plan to go next, and when?
We're going to try to do a very low-key weekend in Seattle as a mini-babymoon about a month after we move, if everything is looking good with the babies and the all-important cervix.
6) If traveling is more important to you than your partner (or vice-versa), how do you compromise to keep both of you happy?
Fortunately we are pretty well matched on this - it's a priority. (Of course we expect to slow way down for a while now that we'll have babies/little kids - both for financial and practical reasons.) Unfortunately we also both share a fear of going to places where we don't speak the language, and we need to get over that so we can expand our horizons
7) Have any favorite vacation money-saving tips to share?
I save so much money on car rentals and (nice!) hotels using Priceline. I'm a big fan. We've also saved a lot of money just using guidebooks to find cheap-but-great food.
1) Is there a place you vacation or weekend again and again? What keeps you going back? I would say Rehoboth. We love it there. I find it peaceful and peace-filled. We only went once since the Kiddos, but it was close and inexpensive enough not to be to big of a hassle. We both love beaches!
2) Did you travel or vacation a lot as a kid? There are six of us so vacations were scarce until it was just my sister and I at home. Then we would drive to visit some of my Mom's family in California and take in the amusement parks and zoo's.
3) Your best vacation ever was...C's 30th birthday, we went to Provincetown.
4) What's on your dream life list of places to visit? If you have a "we will make this happen" list and a "won the lottery" list, feel free to distinguish. I would love to go to Monte Carlo. I also hope that we would be able to travel through Europe via railway...I think that would be fun. We plan to definitely go to Disney World for my 50th birthday.
5) Where do you plan to go next, and when? Right now we are in the visiting family mode as our vacations. Hopefully, we will sneak over to Rehoboth before the "season" begins. C wants to take a road trip and head up North to meet some folks who are on the board.
6) If traveling is more important to you than your partner (or vice-versa), how do you compromise to keep both of you happy? I think C probably wishes we could travel more. Her family traveled more than mine and they saw a lot of interesting things that I never knew existed. We would probably travel more if the money were there...though she would have to drag me kicking and screaming if she wanted to go camping. Thankfully, she is not big on sleeping in a tent.
7) Have any favorite vacation money-saving tips to share? Plan well in advance and search for deals. C's mom gets great deals on-line.
Ooo, I love all things vacation. I love planning vacation, I love thinking about vacation, I love going on vacation, I love reminiscing about going on vacation.
IVF Oct/Nov 2012
Beta #1 = 77, Beta #2 = 190, Beta #3 = 1044
Cautiously optimistic.
2) Did you travel or vacation a lot as a kid? No. My grandparents had a second home in the mountains/ski area that we went to a lot. Our other vacations were mostly to the beach, camping, etc.
3) Your best vacation ever was...I really enjoyed back packing through Europe. My favorite vacation with K was possibly our trip to Nashville for Fan Fair or of course Portugal.
4) What's on your dream life list of places to visit? I would like to see more of this country. New Orleans, Dallas, Chicago (been there but want more time there), Philly, oh and anywhere in Maine. Outside the US, I would like to travel South America.
5) Where do you plan to go next, and when? K would like to go back to Portugal this fall.
6) If traveling is more important to you than your partner (or vice-versa), how do you compromise to keep both of you happy? It's important to both of us. I think what we need to learn to balance is the desire to travel and the need to see family. Going home to see family is not traveling/vacationing. We want to go see and learn about new cultures and places.
7) Have any favorite vacation money-saving tips to share? Book ahead, hostels are great (and more and more are family friendly), B&Bs are awesome.
1) Is there a place you vacation or weekend again and again? What keeps you going back? there's a place about an hour and a half from here. we go camping with friends every July (although we're staying in a cabin this year and did once before, too), and to some cabins every October.
2) Did you travel or vacation a lot as a kid? not really. we did take a really long road trip one year, my mom had a conference in California so we drove a camper from Ohio to Cali and back. we stopped at lots of awesome places, like the Grand Canyon and Mesa Verde, and went to Disneyland. I'd love to recreate that trip. it's the only good memory I have of my bio-father.
3) Your best vacation ever was... BANFF. hands down BEST. of course it was also our honeymoon, but still.
4) What's on your dream life list of places to visit? If you have a "we will make this happen" list and a "won the lottery" list, feel free to distinguish. Alaskan Cruise, PNW, Ireland and Wales, Italy, Norway, DisneyWorld (we're currently saving for this to happen within the next few years), and back to Banff. those are my "make this happen" places. if I won the lottery I'd add Greece, Egypt, Australia and New Zeland, Swiss Alps, Hawaii, China, Thailand, and Japan.
5) Where do you plan to go next, and when? our annual trip in July. I think our next BIG trip is going to be DisneyWorld.
6) If traveling is more important to you than your partner (or vice-versa), how do you compromise to keep both of you happy? I think we'd both love to be able to travel more, but we're both okay with our travel right now. I think we'll definitely do more of it as he gets older and we're more able to.
7) Have any favorite vacation money-saving tips to share? no, not that I can think of. my wife usually does that side of things, she's really good at finding deals and bargains and she likes it, so I leave her to it.
1) Is there a place you vacation or weekend again and again? What keeps you going back? Provincetown. We just love it there - the beach, friendly people, good food... We haven't been since J was born (the inn where we used to stay is not kid-friendly, unfortunately), and we miss it!
2) Did you travel or vacation a lot as a kid? I used to go to my grandparents' house. I had NEVER vacationed with my parents until this month. Ever. And we should have kept it that way! LOL I went to Rio with my grandmother once and to Belem with my grandfather once, and that's about it. Otherwise, it was just getting on a plane on my own and heading to Belo to see my other grandparents.
3) Your best vacation ever was... Not the last one! LOL I've had some great ones, though... I think the very best one was Aruba last year.
4) What's on your dream life list of places to visit? If you have a "we will make this happen" list and a "won the lottery" list, feel free to distinguish. We will make it happen: going back to Prague; Italy, Spain, South Africa. Won the lottery: trip around the world for a year or two.
5) Where do you plan to go next, and when? We're going on a family (K's family!) cruise to Bermuda in July. There may be a weekend getaway in between, but we haven't planned anything yet.
6) If traveling is more important to you than your partner (or vice-versa), how do you compromise to keep both of you happy? We both LOVE to travel and want J to share that passion.
7) Have any favorite vacation money-saving tips to share? Nothing other folks haven't already said... We've found amazing deals online.
1) Is there a place you vacation or weekend again and again? What keeps you going back? Hocking Hills is about a 2 hour drive from us. It is hilly with lots of cabins and trails....best part is no cell reception or computers! We go as often as possible when we need some "us" time....oh and the private hot tub on the back deck of the cabin is great too
2) Did you travel or vacation a lot as a kid? We went on a family vaca atleast once a year, almost always Myrtle Beach
3) Your best vacation ever was... Probably Hawaii
4) What's on your dream life list of places to visit? If you have a "we will make this happen" list and a "won the lottery" list, feel free to distinguish.
Will: San Francisco, Provincetown, Salem MA, Chicago, NYC, New Orleans
Dream: Europe, Africa, Ireland...
5) Where do you plan to go next, and when? We are planning a trip to Myrtle Beach in August
6) If traveling is more important to you than your partner (or vice-versa), how do you compromise to keep both of you happy? Traveling is def more important to me, DP worries more about the $ end then anything.
7) Have any favorite vacation money-saving tips to share? We like to always use Priceline & always get a room with a kitchen so you can make some of your own meals!
2) Did you travel or vacation a lot as a kid? Every summer we rented a cottage in Maine for two weeks and spent another week in upstate NY with my mom's family. That was usually it, though they did take us to Disney World a couple of times.
3) Your best vacation ever was... Probably a tie between a trip to my Paris with my sister and our honeymoon in Hawaii.
4) What's on your dream life list of places to visit? If you have a "we will make this happen" list and a "won the lottery" list, feel free to distinguish. Greek Islands, Paris with the wife, Italy, Germany, UK.
5) Where do you plan to go next, and when? We're going to Disney World in March. For the most part we're on hold with travel until I get pregnant, but it's cheap to fly to Florida, it's a family trip to celebrate my favorite aunt's birthday, and my father's covering the hotel. I'm already freaking out about the cost of park tickets.
6) If traveling is more important to you than your partner (or vice-versa), how do you compromise to keep both of you happy? We both love travel, but we've never had the money to go where we want. Retirement?
7) Have any favorite vacation money-saving tips to share? Our main vacation money-saving tip is not to go anywhere.

1) Is there a place you vacation or weekend again and again? What keeps you going back? Together C and I have been to L.A. and the Bay Area a few times, London twice, a beach in Oregon twice, Whistler twice. We'll most likely go back to all of those at some point. We're also heading back to our favorite inn and restaurant in March (to celebrate our b-days; we went there in July for our anniversary). We also go to my hometown (about 90 minutes away from us) about once a month.
2) Did you travel or vacation a lot as a kid? We did a good amount of domestic travel--around California, cross-country and Hawaii once. I didn't leave the country until I was a teenager.
3) Your best vacation ever was...a tie between our honeymoon trip to London and Dublin and our most recent trip to England and Scotland (dream trip with my Nana, who's from there).
4) What's on your dream life list of places to visit? If you have a "we will make this happen" list and a "won the lottery" list, feel free to distinguish.
Our biggies are Australia/NZ, Italy, Taiwan, Iceland and Japan. If I won the lottery, I'd do an around the world trip including all those as well as going back to South Africa and spending time in SE Asia.
5) Where do you plan to go next, and when? Either Australia/NZ, Italy or Taiwan. The first two are contenders for a 2012/early 2013/pre-kids trip. The third would be to visit my MIL and totally depends on her and C working out the details.
6) If traveling is more important to you than your partner (or vice-versa), how do you compromise to keep both of you happy? Travel is important to both of us and we generally agree on where to go, although I like the idea of warm climates/Asia and C likes cooler places/Europe.
7) Have any favorite vacation money-saving tips to share? We live pretty modestly and try to save to be able to afford travel. We also use a frequent flier miles credit card that we pay off every month.
