Am I a horrible person? GD question

So I've been really good with watching what I eat after being diagnosed with GD.  Some days I feel like I'm starving myself just to make sure my numbers stay in line.  For the past week my numbers have been really good even though I have been eating more and being more adventurous with what I eat.  Today we had a potluck at work and one of the women brought in these amazing cookies that I love so I had two with a cup of milk.  I was terrified that my numbers would be so high after eating this, but I checked an hour later and I was within range.  Am I a horrible person for caving into the crazings?  Anybody else out there wih GD that slips every now and then?

  • You're not horrible! Are you on insulin? If you're on insulin you should be able to correct for whatever you want to eat. While I don't think they recommend eating sugary stuff all the time, it is not realistic to say you are not going to have anything sweet at all.

Especially if your numbers are within range, you're not doing any harm.

  • Nope.  Nothing horrible about that.  Here is the thing: yes, avoid super sugary things, especially those that raise your sugars too high, but a carb is a carb is a carb.  Stay within your limits, but that doesn't mean that for a snack you can't have a cookie now and again.  Don't make a habit of it and watch your sugars and you'll be fine.

If this helps at all, I am 38 weeks.  I had indulgences occasionally throughout my pregnancy.  My A1C has been between 4.9-5.1 the entire time.  Our LO is measuring at the 50th percentile.  My doctors are thrilled with my weight and sugar control.  You can have a cookie and it is not the end of the world!  Heck, you can have two if they don't spike your number.  Enjoy them when you have them!!!

  • It is just fine to indulge, just watch your sugars and don't overdo it...
  • Hi!  I just wanted to say (haven't been to this board in a while) it is totally okay to indulge.  Just watch what you eat MOST of the time.  I had to send in my numbers weekly and every once in a while I had a high #.  They were never concerned.  Ella was born on May 1st and is a happy and healthy 8.5 month old.  She was 6 lbs 2 ounces at birth, which was 4 days before my EDD.

As long as you are careful most of the time, enjoy!

  • Thanks for the responses!  My numbers are really well controlled with just diet so I figured a break every now and then for a little sweet treat can't be the end if the world but I'm glad I'm not alone.  I'm still just a bit confused with the whole GD thing most of the time so this board is always really helpful.

  • With any kind of diabetes, the person needs a break! I had to have a 2 week break during pregnancy (my numbers were fine! No biggy) but I didn't keep good records of them and so on, so my Endo got on to me over it. You're only human, so don't be hard on yourself!

  • Not horrible at all!  The other thing is that you shouldn't be starving.  The diabetes clinic made that very clear to me and said it was really important that I eat enough to get the nutrition for the baby.  Personally, the hard part I had with the GD diet was that I found I was supposed to eat all the time and I wasn't hungry.  I wasn't used to 3 full meals and 3 snacks a day.
