If you have a brick fireplace hearth

What is on it?

Ours probably comes out about a foot.  I have the foam edges stuck on it, and then I have this very thin quilt thing over the top (it's small), and then there is a bin of books on each end (which also holds the quilt in place).

I've had toy buckets on it too, but the kids have been climbing on it a lot.  Oh and I have a tension baby gate in front of the fireplace, which is gas and has glass doors (last thing i need is someone taking a faceplant through the glass).

Just curious what your babyproofing/decorating entails.

  • She gets a spanking if she climbs on it.

  • I bet your youngest is old enough for a NO and a timeout if she climbs up. We just removed the padded edging from our TV stand last weekend, boy I was glad to see that crap go! I'd probably just be stricter with indoor behavior ESP by a fireplace. Our cousins have the huge wine glass and bottle holder that I stare at in awe when I see it in one piece with a toddler around. But ...they have always been strict with their little one and now she even says no touch.
  • We put our couch in front of it once Evan was mobile and it will stay there through Andrew's toddler stage.  It was the only way that I had piece of mind.  We only used the fireplace occasionally (wood burning), so it was not a big deal.

  • We have a long gate from wall to wall. It is not pretty but it is functional.

  • I don't, but my parents do (it's actually stone and marble)... and he's over there quite often. Like Telyco said, we have just taught him from the beginning to be careful around it. He likes to sit on the floor and "vroom" his cars down it. If (on rare occasion) there is a fire lit he knows he has to stay away from it and can only sit by it with an adult. It's never been an issue. But we would never leave him unattended in the room (my parents house is all open concept, so you can see him wherever you are in the great room)
  • we have the foam around the edge and then the normal fireplace tools.  The kids use it as their stage when there isn't a fire in it.  When there is a fire they know not to climb up there. I get nervous if they are fighting around it but they are generally really good.

I grew up with a fireplace and we used to lay right in front of it or have our feet really close to the screen when it iwas really cold.

  • It's not really about me worrying if the kids go on it.  I just don't see myself putting some fancy-super-breakable-vase type item on there.  But, I dont' see it just being plain either.  That's why I was wondering what moms put on the FP.
