Shouldn't a pregnant woman know this?

I had girls' night last night and one of my friends is due 5 days after me. We were talking about peeing and I said that I was peeing a lot less with this baby and I thought it was because s/he was transverse and therefore not putting at much pressure on my bladder. My pg friend asked what that meant. I had to explain it to her and then physically show her on my belly, like head is here butt is here. Isn't positioning of baby something pretty common to know? Of course I shouldn't expect much of this friend because her form of birth control was "my mom had a hard time getting pregnant so I probably can't get pregnant".

Re: Shouldn't a pregnant woman know this?

  • Maybe she's only heard the doctor say breech. I don't know. Although maybe she has no clue. LOL!

  • Everyone has a different level of vocabulary.  I'd chalk it up to that.  Now as for the other comment about not getting pregnant, that is Hmm-worthy.

  • I wouldn't have known the term transverse if it wasn't for the bump.  And my doctor never really mentioned positioning at my u/s because he was flipping around the entire time.

  • I'm a FTM and didn't know what this is until I just googled it..my Dr. told me my baby was breech at my last appointment, but that is the only position I have heard of...lol So, I would have been in your friends boat.

  • I've also never heard of all of the positions and my dr didn't do my u/s and the tech didn't tell me much.  I feel I am a well educated working woman (graduated from college, have a full time job that I love), yet i'll be the first one to tell you I don't know a lot about being pregnant or taking care of a baby (i've never changed a diaper).  I think it has to do with what you've been exposed to and how much you research!

  • I don't know my baby's position.  I had assumed he was small enough to still keep flipping around.
  • I wouldn't have know what you meant, and I consider myself pretty smart, I am at least well educated Big Smile.

To be completly honest, I had to ask my doctor what a placenta was when he told me I had an anterior one at my 10 week appt. Even now I can't keep up with all the vocab, nor do I really want to.

  • I also wouldn't know what that means. My Dr doesn't use any of those terms with me. She just checks and the baby is always just laying the same way as it always has. Nothing different.

Same here, I suppose unless it was brought up to her about her baby she would have no idea...well she does now :)

  • Well honestly I would think she'd've researched baby positions on her own if she hadn't heard it -- but maybe not by now (closer to delivery).

Her bc method is interesting though!!

  • Yep, I'm in the same boat as a lot of the other posters.  Pregnancy is not something I ever really thought I would experience up until about a month before I actually took this road.  Researching it was never priority for me.  I know basically what I need to know.  Now, with the context of your comment, I think your meaning was relatively obvious, but honestly I couldn't have said which side position was correct versus the transverse.

I just show up to the doctor on time, do what I'm told, and when they say "push", I'll push Stick out tongue

  • I honestly wouldn't have known. I've heard of it but couldn't explain any position other than breech. Dumb dumb me googled "pregnancy positions" and got quite the opposite of what I was looking for =P

  • Meh, not a lot of women know these things because docs don't always explain and they don't usually ask questions.

This.  Even in the dozen pregnancy books I own, the only ones I recall mentioning baby's position are Ina Mae's ones.

  • For the most part, I research things as I go, so I'm not going to know about baby positioning until it's late enough to worry about it! However, I'm pretty sure my mom's fertility doesn't affect mine, lol.

I'm pretty sure I read about it in WTE. I read that book cover to cover before I got pg and then again while I was pregnant reading each month as I got into that month.

  • Even with my third I didn't really hear much of transverse.  I learned the position and what it meant on the bump.  Same as an anterior placenta.  I only knew what that was from here as well Embarrassed.  I guess back in my naive days I didn't really pay attention to positions or other things I do now (kick counts, types of movements, etc).  I only knew of a placenta previa because I had one with DD2 but with DD1 I have no clue where the placenta was located or how serious Pre-e was until I had to deliver 3 1/2 weeks early.  So thanks to the bump I have learned so much about pregnancy (the good and the bad).

ETA: and I think my LO is transverse as well.  Where the movements have been and not much pressure on the bladder either.

  • I actually remembered from my high school anatomy class what transverse meant. So I knew that term long before I got pregnant, but I guess that's not the norm.
