1st Trimester

2nd beta in, please help not looking great need advice

I had a beta done Monday at 15 dpo and the beta was 273 taken at 3:30 pm.  I had another one drawn on Thursday, at 8:30 am and the beta was 795, which isn't quite doubling.  However, if I do the math, by the end of the day it should have doubled.

My doctor's office said they want to see it double or triple in 48 hours.  The receptionist told me the doctor isn't in, but that she will most definitely be having me repeat the beta because it is not high enough.  Does this sound like I am in trouble here?  Please be honest, I really don't mind!  Thanks.

  • My doctor (and everything I've read) says that anywhere from 48-72 hours. You can check out Beta Base, they have a calculator, which will tell you exactly what your doubling time is.

Also, my doctor does repeat betas until your reach their set point (I think their's is 1500). It doesn't mean anything is wrong - just early and they like to see them rising nicely until they reach that point.

  • Those numbers sound fine. The number should double every 48-72 hours.

  • Looks like well more than double to me.

  • I went to https://www.babymed.com/tools/hcg-calculator and input all of your information, and it gave me this:

    Total hCG Difference:522 mlU/ml (191.2%)
hCG Doubling Every:1 days 18.15 hours (42.15 Hours)
    2-Day Increase:601 mlU/ml (120.1%) (normal)

I guess I dont really understand what they are not happy with?? Maybe they just want to see the  number get bigger??  Please update us after your next beta, and let us know what the doctors think.  Good luck!

  • I think your numbers look fine.  You are so early.  I wouldn't be worried at this point!

  • With my 2nd miscarriage, my numbers were only doubling every 60-something hours. Even though it was in the range, my doctor and nurse were concerned. I was out of town, and never got to see them before I started miscarrying.. not that they could have done anything.  I think in the beginning they want to see it doubling quicker than when the numbers get a little higher. I am not trying to concern you...  because every pregnancy is different and you ARE in the range that is considered good. I just want to be honest with you. You are still in the range, and I hope that the doctor gets back with you ASAP so you have some answers! And I bet they will bring you in for another blood draw to see where the numbers are going. I have my fingers and toes crossed for you! People in your range DO go on to have healthy pregnancies!

Thanks for your response, and I am sorry for your losses!  Do the docs want to see below every 48 hours for doubling in the beginning then?

  • My doubling time averaged just under 72 hours. My HCG at week 6 was 5500, which was on the low side. Had an ultrasound at 7+4 and the baby measured right on track with a heartbeat of 155. It does not have to double in 48 hours for everything to be okay.
