When to have #2?

I know this is a subjective question, but I love hearing everyone's input & advice. Here is mine & my husband's current dilemma:

DS is 25 months old and we've always wanted to plan to have kiddos 3.5 years apart. It seemed to be a good age span for both of us growing up. However, DS is currently in a pricey childcare center that we LOVE which makes it worth writing that painful check every month BUT we could NEVER afford two in that daycare...even with the "2nd child discount". We are both teacher/coaches & NEED to have a April/May/June baby to help us optimize our time between busy seasons, which would technically mean getting pregnant around August.

WWYD: Would you wait to have another one on account of a phenomenal daycare situation or would you go ahead & try for number 2 this fall knowing you will have to switch daycares.

If you're in favor of switching daycares, anyone in the L/CP area have any recommendations?

 Thanks ladies!

Re: When to have #2?

  • Could you keep DS#1 in his current situation since you love it and put the baby somewhere else less expensive until #1 graduated out of the pricey place? Somewhere like an in-home daycare? I realize having two kids in two places wouldn't be convenient, but if you could find somewhere close to your house or to DS#1's daycare, maybe it would be workable?

  • What will the gap be between taking him out of the current childcare and putting him in Pre-k?  Is that an option?

I'm inclined to say start trying in the fall- he'll never remember where he went to school, but it will alter the relationship with his sibling.

  • um, what?

obviously the answer here is to whore yourself out somewhere so that G can stay in his AWESOME class and I can be the one to love on NewBabyTxTech.

I mean, c'mon.. did you even have to post this? The answer is crystal clear.

But in all seriousness, I have no idea how I would make that decision because, like you said, I do NOT want to move Cam and there is no way in heck we could afford two kids there.. especially since they don't discount the infant room for employees. Good luck with that decision.

  • That is the situation that we're in and we're just going to have to wait until DD starts school to have #2. I'm not willing to move DD (she LOVES where she is and loves her friends and teachers) and I want our next child to have the same experience.

So, our kids will be about 5 years apart, which seems like a lot right now, but really isn't when they're older.

The ultimate choice is up to you and there are pros and cons to each situation.
  • In your situation, I would wait.  I'm a pretty big believer in things working themselves out (which is what I'm hoping will happen if I manage to get pg by some miracle) but if I knew that I would have to pull Kate out of her (theoretical) preschool I would wait for number 2.

  • i would try in the fall. if you don't get pg immediately to make it into the april/may/june window would you stop trying and wait until the next year? you never know how long it will take to get pregnant, so if you're wanting a baby now i'd go for it.

i also like the idea of keeping your ds in his current school and taking your next dc to a less expensive school. have you looked at any other schools yet? you might find one that you like just as much that is not as expensive.

  • If I was sure that our financial situation wasn't going to improve to be able to afford the fabulous childcare situation with two kids, I would for go the 3.5-years-apart rule and wait until DC #1 was in Kindergarten. That's just me though. I would be perfectly fine with kids who were 5 years apart.

If you want a second, you just try when you're ready and make adjustments after.  You just never know how long it's going to take.

This is my advice as well... good luck with whatever you choose.

Do you plan on simply waiting until Cam is in school or are y'all happy with one?
