Gender Selection with IVF and Fertility doctor in Frisco

I am a little ambivalent about talking about this, but we are getting ready to do an IVF cycle with Dr. Goldstein in Frisco. I have a genetic condition that resulted in our first child having abnormal kidneys, so we are going to be using IVF with PGD. The question is that the doctor is able to determine the sex of the embryo before putting them back into me and I don't know if we should do this.

My husband wants to do this, but I am not sure. I was surprised to also meet somebody in the doctors office who did this as well (for a different reason) but wanted a girl as she had three boys.

I spoke with Dr. Goldstein at length about this and he actually encouraged me not to do the gender selection, but said that they would do it if we asked for it.

 any thoughts?

  • Personally, I wouldn't care either way about the sex, as long as I know the baby is going to be healthy. By doing PGD, you know that you are putting back a healthy embryo.  That's the end goal, right?

  • They embryologist will know the gender of the embryos, they will only transfer the healthiest and most promising embryos regardless of gender.  With IVf, you  will be fortunate to have two mature enough and without genetic abnormality to put back. You will be blessed if you end up with a healthy baby after 9 months.  I didn't do pGD, but I know others that have.  You could pick the gender and end up with out a successful pregnancy, so there is no guarantee.  Aside from ethical issues, you can see why he might try to talk you out gender selection.

I was 33 at the time of retriveal, no genetic issues just a dx of endo. I had 26 eggs, 19 fertilize to day 3, 11 embies to pick from on day 5.  Transferred two embies, nothing left was quality enough to freeze.  Lost twin early in the pregancy and ended up with a healthy baby girl.  I saw dr. Goldstein early in my journey and he is a smart man and an excellent doctor.  Good luck with whatever you decide.

Years of trying and treatment, IVF#1 brought us our darling C!

You don't know 100% that you are putting back healthy embryos, you have a better chance at having a healthy embryo after going through PGD; however it's not exact.  The process itself poses risks to the embryos and since PGD removes 1-2 cells from an approx 8 cell embryo for testing, there is always a chance that one of the remaining cells that were not biopsied could be genetically abnormal.  I do agree that PGD for genetic testing can significantly increase your odds of delivering a baby without your genetic issues.  As far as gender selection, I personally would just have my RE put back the embryo(s) that are graded the best.

We considered PGD for our next protocol since I m/c at 12 weeks in October and testing showed Downs' was the problem with the baby, but since we don't have genetic issues our RE advised against it.  Good luck with your decision!

  • Thanks for the replies. Well we have to see. My husband and I are going to be meeting with our minister and talk about this. It has been very difficult trying to figure out what the best thing to do is. I met again with the doctor with my husband and, lets just say it seems to be very difficult to figure out the best thing to do. We need to figure this out fast.
