What is on it?
Ours probably comes out about a foot. I have the foam edges stuck on it, and then I have this very thin quilt thing over the top (it's small), and then there is a bin of books on each end (which also holds the quilt in place).
I've had toy buckets on it too, but the kids have been climbing on it a lot. Oh and I have a tension baby gate in front of the fireplace, which is gas and has glass doors (last thing i need is someone taking a faceplant through the glass).
Just curious what your babyproofing/decorating entails.
Re: If you have a brick fireplace hearth
we have the foam around the edge and then the normal fireplace tools. The kids use it as their stage when there isn't a fire in it. When there is a fire they know not to climb up there. I get nervous if they are fighting around it but they are generally really good.
I grew up with a fireplace and we used to lay right in front of it or have our feet really close to the screen when it iwas really cold.
