Babies on the Brain

Was told I have Adenomyosis last night and chances of baby are almost none

I am 32 years have a 7 and a 10 yr old.  I was just married to my sweetheart last September and we were planning to have a baby of our own soon.  2 years ago I started bleeding super heavy and passing large clots.  At that time my dr told me to either cauterize my uterine lining and tie my tubes or Mirena.  I was on the Mirena 2 years and the first year was pretty quiet.  Then I had horrible bleeding while at a nursery one weekend with my husband and my dr discovered 2 large cysts on my right ovary.  I had a laprioscopy last may.  In August I started bleeding massive clots when my dr did the ultrasound he said my uterus was full of blood clots and prescribed me Aygestin (Progestin)  and within a week it stopped.  I still have the IUD in and 2 1/2 weeks ago I started bleeding again and was clotting golfball sized clots and soaking overnight pads everytime I went to the bathroom.  I had another ultrasound and my dr said it appeared I had a 2cm fibroid at the top of my uterus.  The next morning I went in for a D&C Hysteroscopy to remove the fibroid, the IUD and the clots.  I went for my post-op last night and was told that I have adenomyosis.  My uterine lining that typically sheds during my cycle grew into my uterus wall and muscle keeping my uterus from contracting to shed my lining so it just bleeds and bleeds. When he was cleaning my uterus out he was amazed at how much clots were removed.  He said normal uterus size is 6-8cm and mine is 12.

He told me my options are mass hormones.. try to regulate if we want a baby but honestly I will most likely never be able to get pregnant the way my uterus is... or hysterectomy and no kids.  I have been devistated..

Has anyone else had anything involving adenomyosis and had success with pregnancy here?

  • I don't have any words of wisdom, just wanted to say how sorry I am for all you've been through.

  • I don't have any advice or experience in this, I just want you to know my thoughts and prayers are with you, I can't imagine how awful this must be for you. I think you're smart to get a second opinion.
Married. A 3 year old and a 2 year old. Both girls. Pregnant with another. Someday I'll put a ticker up...

  • Hi, I am mostly a lurker but I have a question.

When you say OHSU, do you mean Oregon Health and Science University?

If so and that means you live in Portland, I have another doctor/clinic to recommend.  PM me if you want the info.

  • I went to OHSU yesterday (Oregon Health Sciences Unversity) and met with a Dr who the gal at the desk called a hormonal expert.  She reviewed all of my records frmo my doctor and she said that she didn't disagree with any of the steps my doctor took, he was very thorough in his records and she agreed with him on all accounts except the hormones he has had me on the last 2 weeks after the D&C Hysteroscopy.  She said she believes she can regulate my cycle by taking 2 birthcontrol (loestrin) a day until the bleeding finally stops.. then once a day but that we should not have any issues concieving.  And she feels we are far away from a hysterectomy.  She said if this does not control the bleeding she will have me come in for Estrogen by IV.

At this point it was music to my ears to hear that she felts it wasn't the end of the road for us.  However, my doctor did these same pills before we opted for the IUD.  I was on the strongest birthcontrol pill (hormonal) and got pregnant (I know crazy) it ended up not being a viable pregnancy, baby wasn't developing.. so I took the pill to induce the miscarriage and a few weeks after I had the IUD placed.

So one day at a time for me, she didn't rule out the adenomyosis, but said the only way to really diagnose is to remove the uterus and send to a lab, but then you can't put it back.

I appreciate everyone's well wishes!  Thank you so much!  I appreciate the support in a time when I have felt so alone.
