That "stood up too fast" feeling.

The last few days I've been getting dizzy/seeing black for a few seconds after I stand up, and today it's happened pretty much every single time I've stood up from sitting, no matter how fast or slow I move.  I called the doc and she said I need to drink a lot more water (I thought I was drinking plenty already), and eat six small meals a day with some good protein each time.  I've been eating snacks between each meal, but not necessarily including protein.  Guess I'll have to change that!  She also said in addition to upping my water intake, I should throw some gatorade in there too to balance my electrolytes.  She said this feeling is common in pregnancy (which I knew) but when it's happening that much it can be dangerous and could actually turn into passing out if you don't stay on top of it.  Just wanted to share in case anyone else is experiencing this too!

  • Thanks for the 4-1-1! I will be adding some Gatorade to my liquid intake! :)

  • I get this too, really bad. If I'm lying down, I have to sit up for like 30 seconds before getting up.

  • Thanks I've been really dizzy today. Didn't think of the water tip
  • Usually that "stood up too fast" feeling is Orthostatic Hypotension.  It's a drop in blood pressure when changing positions, most often from lying down to sitting or sitting to standing.  If it continues I'd have your doc check your blood pressure.  Unfortunately a lot of times if your blood pressure is checked when just sitting in one position it will show up normal, so make sure to stress that it happens when changing position.  They should check it differently to give you an accurate measurement.
  • I am, but I think mine might be low blood pressure. Nothing helps it :(

  • This sounds like anemia or low iron to me. I've been anemic for years and whenever I get blackouts when standing up too fast, I know I need to increase my iron in take.

I would try to eat a lot more iron-enriched foods like spinach or black beans and if that doesn't work, you may have to take a higher dose of iron. I'm on an iron supplement in addition to the amount in the prenatals.
