Moms with babies already here Check in

How is it going? I don't know if there is a special check in day but maybe it could be thursday?

Anyways we are doing okay here. Last night LO was up every hour between 11 and 3 to eat. Put this on top of me being awake for almost 24 hours trying to get MY sleep schedule back on track ( I switch way too easily into a 3rd shift pattern and I was trying to get back to being a normal person) I am EXHAUSTED today.
Thankfully DH could stay home for a couple hours in the morning and take care of her so I got a couple uninterupted hours (yay for the non-schedules of grad students!)

My depression seems to be going away and we are settling in nicely.

I had horrible engorgement and I did everything I could to deplete my supply...It worked. I went from producing 8 oz every 2 to 3 hours to about 12 oz a day Oops! I'm finally getting it back up so I can stop using my stash.

But BF (or pumping in my cause) is wonderful. I gained about 50 lbs this pregnancy and was up to 195 at my 36w doctors appointment. I went into labor the day before my 37 wk appointment so I know I had probably gained another couple pounds ( i was past caring at that point). I just got up the nerve to step on the scale today and I weigh 166!!!! This is still bad for my 5'3 body BUT its a huge improvement and I've been eating pretty much whatever I want for the past 3 weeks.

So how are you other Mamas doing?

  • I'm doing much better. The baby blues have gone and now I'm just dealing with being tired! Maeve still isn't gaining like she should so we're supplementing with formula. Truth be told, I don't care for breast feeding so if we end up having to go completely to formula that's okay.

Ive been taking her out for short trips every day, a big no no for some people but it keeps me sane. So far we've just been to Starbucks and the bagel shop but I'm hoping to walk her around the mall soon.

Ive lost weight too, about 30 pounds (I gained 50). Im really looking forward to being able to go to the gym. It'll be nice to be active again!

Last night I had my first glass of wine since getting pregnant... It was everything I thought it would be and more.

Hope other moms are doing well!!

  • I'm doing pretty good.  Zoe is now 17 days old and I think she has hit a growth spurt.  She wants to eat all the time and doesn't let me put her down.  I've been pumping since the beginning, but just recently she has started to try to BF as well.  She gets frustrated, but at least she is trying.  The only bad thing about pumping is that one of my nipples is flat and the pump kills it...it is just so sore right now.  I've moved her out of disposable diapers and into her cloth ones and I am loving them!  Also I've gotten pretty good at typing with one hand.

  • Hi mommies. We have been doing pretty well here. Henry is a sweet little guy and hasn't been giving us much trouble at all. Once he gets to sleep he sleeps well and I have been having to wake him half the time to feed him. DH and I have a good team approach to nighttime. I get LO up and feed him and DH changes him (before or after, depending on when he needs it) and put him back down. When things get tough and he will not go back down for quite some time DH will ask for help, but this is rare. DH goes back to work on Monday, so we will see what happens then. I don't want to keep him up all night even though I know he will not let me do it all.

Unfortunately, breastfeeding is still something we are both working on. From the start Henry never latched too well and once he did he only sucked a couple of times before getting frustrated. He is an excellent cup feeder so we had been giving him expressed milk to supplement. The lactation consultant with the birth center is so helpful but it seems like when she calls things are going well and then go downhill after I have told her of great things are. I sent her an email this morning asking if she can see us again. Wet diapers have been on the low end of the scale and he has had a couple with urate crystals in it (which I realize can be ok, but I just don't want things to get worse or him to lose weight).

I rented my hospital pump and have pumped twice now in order to build up a supply for when I return to work. The pump also came with a hand pump (Medela Harmony) and so I have been using that for the cup feedings. I am happy with the cup feeding, as I do not not not want to bottle feed yet to avoid nipple confusion, but I still would love for him to be able to nurse effectively without. It would sure make those 3AM feedings a little easier to not have to mess around with a pump, cup, and spilled milk!

Other than the feeding issues, Henry is an angel and we love him to bits!

  • Things are going pretty good here. I definitely had the baby blues the first couple of days, but it's getting better. Chloe slept great two nights in a row, only waking to eat, but last night she was up again. Aside from that, I'm just getting used to having no free time...I thought I'd be able to do all sorts of chores around the house, but I only get a couple of things done here and there. LO loves to eat, and just in the last couple days, seems to be eating constantly!

I hope to pick up my pump this weekend so I can start building a stash of BM so DH can help out with feeding once in awhile. I bought a cheapo manual pump when I was at Target the other day, and fed her a bottle from that...and she took it no problems! So that was reassuring.

We're just all still getting used to each other around here...in a few weeks I'm sure it will seem like she's always been here!

  • My baby is only a couple days old, and the 1st night home was some what rough.  My milk still has not come in and he seems to be very hungry.  Luckily, today it seems like it is transitioning into a milk supply.  I hope so because my nipples are KILLING me.  They tried everything at the hospital to help it, I am just hanging in there!  Love being a mommy though :)

  • We're doing okay. It's day 6 and I'm still having BFing issues. She doesn't have a good latch (particularly on my right side) and I am scabbed and blistered and in pain. I'm engorged and have a fever and am trying to get through it. I've been supplementing because she seems to be starving on BM alone. My lactation consultant friend is coming over today to see what else we can do.  She has been sleeping well at night, but only when she's in bed with me. She won't sleep in the pnp for more than an hour at a time, when she's with me she usually goes 3 hours. I've been a bit of an emotional wreck, which I didn't think would happen with kid #3, but I've still been crying every day over random crap. I haven't cried yet today, progress!

  • Hi mommies!  Daphne, the hubs and I are adjusting very well. She is gaining weight ever so slightly...but at least she's gaining!

Days & nights are still a bit mixed up...but seriously, neither of us mind. I mean, we've waited so long to be parents...and honestly, I don't think I have room to ever complain about anything ever again.?

Life is full; thank you Jesus.

  • My husband went back to work so I have taken on the bulk of the nightfeeding.  Last night was an improvement...3 hours between feedings, instead of 2:)  I go to bed around 3am and get up around noon....while waking every couple hours all night.

She was a little fussy yesterday but overall she is so sweet and calm.  She lost 9 oz at her dr visit when she was 4 days old, but 5 days later she was up 11 oz so she is gaining well!  Her jaundice appears to be gone.

I don't think I have baby blues, as I don't feel any sadness over the baby, but definitely wayyyy more sensitive.  Crying a lot over TV shows and sad things I have read online.  And I cried quite a bit about my friend hurting my feelings (that I posted about).  I guess I do feel sad, but thankfully not over anything baby related.  I was very worried about PPD since I have been on antidepressants for yrs and went off of them in my 2nd trimester.  I still am worried it may happen.

Still having BF issues, very low supply.  No more cramping.  Just pressure/tenderness down there.  I have been losing a little every day.  I gained 28 total and have lost 18 lbs so far.  Only 10 to go!   Although I was 10 lbs heavier than I used to be when I got pregnant so I want to lose 20.  Hopefully I can do that once I am able to work out again.  I am wearing the Belly Bandit to help flatten my belly, but I had a baby bump before I even got pregnant, so I doubt my stomach will be flat no matter what.

I just can't wait to leave the house with her!  I am going stir crazy and can't wait to show her off to people.

    My Gang.  Halloween 2013

  • Hi Ladies - Congratulations on your little ones!!

Hope I can join in...I participated in a daily check-in on the high-risk pregnancy board for 3 months while on bed rest for PTL.  Let's just say I'm thrilled to be a mom of a healthy baby and be "normal" now...so opposite of what my pregnancy was.

Cannon was born 1/4/12 at 8 lbs, via c-section (breech).  Recovery for me has been much smoother than I could have hoped.  Started BF-ing right away and that went great until day 6 when I was so engorged he couldn't latch.  He went 13 hours w/o eating until I realized I needed to pump so he'd be able to latch (thank God I'd gotten the Medela Harmony hand pump ahead of time just in case).  That was the worst day I've had - major breakdown because he wouldn't eat, I was engorged and sore, and milk was leaking constantly.  Since then, I need to use the pump every couple days.  He also goes a lot longer between feedings than most newborns, apparently.  Anywhere from 4-6 hours.  But, he's gained weight (surpassed his birth weight by 13 days) and has plenty of wet dipes so pedi said keep doing what we're doing.  Guess we're supposed to add Vitamin D to his diet too.

Now we're working on a nightly routine to get him on a schedule.  Tonight will be the first feed/bath/rock routine before putting him to bed "for the night." haha...

Next week, we start introducing a bottle of BM  so DH can feed him- if anyone has had experience with this and has advice please share!

Great reading all your experiences - good luck getting enough rest and nutrition to sustain our schedules!

Both Bruce and I are doing great! He turned three weeks yesterday and I can't believe how different he looks already! He is getting so long that his newborn clothes are getting tight and his cheeks are so chubby now :) BF is going good and he is such a little piggy. He's been having some issues with gas so gas drops have become our best friend but other than that I have no complaints. I love my little boy so much!

  • Just over 2 weeks in, and Eliot is a sweet, easy to please boy.  Most of the time he only gets fussy if he has a basic need to be met - feeding, wet diaper, burp, although in recent days he has a brief "hold me or I'll go bsc" period around 9:00.  He also doesn't really care for his crib, he gets fussy if I put him in it while he's still conscious.  So he mostly sleeps in his bouncer at night for now.  Peds said that's fine, but in a few months we'll need to work on transitioning him.

BFing - the initial clamp down continues to hurt like a b**** but once it's done it doesn't hurt, and my nips aren't really sore in between anymore.  Yay lanolin!  He is eating well enough and gaining so that at our last peds appointment the doc said that we could try letting him sleep a little longer at night.  He still never goes for more than 5 hours at a time but I'll take what I can get!  We did have a crazy growth spurt day around day 11, where I was basically couch ridden all day, but he did seem to chill out at night.  I can only hope the trend continues.

DH was home for the first week and helped out a lot, as did my sister who was visiting too - she pretty much cleaned the entire townhouse.  I haven't done much since she left, only basic dusting and sweeping, wiping counters etc.  Honestly the chore that I am most on top of is laundry - I have to be, since we're CDing.

While I didn't really get the baby blues, I am all around more emotional/sensitive.  Generally I'm pretty patient with people (I am a middle school teacher after all) but I actually had to walk away and count down in my head to avoid chewing out my MIL last week, and I got pretty ticked off at DH when he suddenly couldn't find certain things of the baby's.  I'm not sure if it's a PP thing or an interrupted sleep thing.

I hope the rest of you are enjoying your sweeties!
