April 2012 Moms

when will you start your maternity leave?

Will you be working up until your water breaks/you go into labor? Or will you start maternity leave on/around your due date? I'm nervous about my water breaking on the carpet at work and having to have someone drive me to the hospital...i'm just not really that comfortable w/ anyone at work.

what are you gals going to do?

Re: when will you start your maternity leave?

  • I'm starting my leave when I go into labor, or the day I am induced (my OB induces at 41 weeks).

I know what you mean. I teach 7th graders. I'm worried about my water breaking in front of them. Honestly, I plan to carry a water bottle with me at all times the last few weeks and if my water breaks, I'll just spill it on myself and pretend that's what just happened ;-)

Me, too! Even though I know it's rare for a woman's water to break like that. But still, I'm due April 9th and my last day of work is March 30th.

  • I purchased a supplemental disability plan last spring and I intend to use it. My doctor is putting me on disability at 37weeks and 6days. It will be on Monday, March 26. However, my district's spring break is March 19-23, so my last day of the school year will be March 16. My maternity leave does not officially begin until the day after I give birth. I'll get either 6 or 8 weeks of semi-paid leave and will take unpaid leave for the remaining week or two.

Our school year ends May 23 and I'll resume work in the beginning of August.

  • Glad this was posted again.  I had an appointment yesterday and my OB strongly suggested that if we could financially handle it, to start my mat leave at 36 weeks.  She said that by law you are allowed to do this.  I was completely unaware (thought I had to give birth for mat leave to start) and am glad she said something because I was trying to figure out how it would all work for me.

My due date is 4/26 and I am a teacher so our spring break is April 2-6 which happens to be my 36th week.  I am SERIOUSLY considering going on spring break and not returning...I also have some sick days that I have saved up that will help as well.

Anyone else hear of the 36 week law?

  • I'm starting April 2 and i'm due April 9.  I was going to go right till the end but my mom kept telling me to at least have a week before, so I went with that.

I live in Quebec, Canada and we are allowed to start mat leave up to 8 weeks prior to our due date.  It's pretty sweet but I think i'd rather have the time off after once baby is here than to start 8 weeks early.

  • I plan on working up until labor (as long as there are no complications). I live in the city and my hospital is in the city so I can always just grab a cab to the hospital if I need to. Also, my commute is 30 min door to door so I think I'll be fine working up until. I want to have the longest time I can get with my new baby!

  • My due date is the week before Spring Break in April. I'm not returning after our spring break. And hopefully will have the baby by the end of that break!

Maternity leave doesn't start until I give birth (start counting 6 or 8 weeks). Any time I take before then would be sick time. I am using my sick days so I'll continue to get paid during those 6 weeks.

  • My due date is April 28th, my last scheduled day of work will be May 4th. If I go into labor sooner, the schools can just get a sub sooner!

  • I am stopping as soon as possible!!  I can take up to 3 months medical leave, without affecting my mat leave so I would like to take at least a month.  My DH wants me to stop Feb 20 which is about 2 months before our due date so we will see what happens!

  • There are a lot of teachers answering today.  I was going to work up until the due date until I found out that I have long term disability.  I my last day teaching will be March 30th and I will probably have to take a day or two to finish the IEPs I will be holding on the 30th.

The awsome thing about this plan is that we have spring break in mid March then testing.  This will make my last days so much easier.  The bummer of this is I almost always lose my voice during testing because I have to read the test to my sped students.

  • I am a preschool teacher with daycare hours in a very rough, classroom.  Our class is made up of mostly boys who like to beat the crap out of each other.  Due to this, and the fact that they make my blood pressure rise, I will be leaving March 18, a month before our due date.  Both my husband and I were born early and I keep hearing how much that sucks, and not having things together.  Plus, I am literally on the floor with these kids all day and my body cannot handle it much longer!

  • Another teacher here. I am due on April 15th. The first week of April is our spring break. I plan on working through March (the end of week 37 for me), going on Spring Break, and then officially starting my maternity leave on April 9th.

  • I am working until 3/30; I'll be 39 weeks. That gives me exactly 12 weeks off before the end of the school year.
  • I plan on working until I'm in labor...as long as my body can handle it. I don't get any paid maternity leave so I'm taking 8 weeks through FMLA and would rather them be after the baby than before. My husband and I can't afford for me to be out of work any longer than that.

  • My last day of work is slated for 3/23, 4 weeks before my due date. In NJ/my company I can get disability at full pay for 4 weeks prior to my due date, and it doesn't affect FMLA time - might as well take advantage of it!

  • I am going at 38wks, or when I go into labor if it's before then.

This is b/c the chances I'll make it to 38wks are slim, or if I do get there, I'll go very soon after.  I probably also won't be up for commuting 1+hr each way by then!

  • This time around, DH works one floor down from me.  Unless I have complications in the end, I will wait until I go into labor or my scheduled section at 41 weeks.
  • 03/26 is my first scheduled day of FMLA.  My EDD based on LMP is 04/02, but based on conception, it's 03/23.  So we shall see!

  • I think it might depend on what state you are in. I'm in CA and it says right on the edd website that you can go out 4 weeks before your due date. If you don't take it,  you don't get to add it on after the baby is born, so i figure why not. I'm going out 4 weeks before and 18 weeks after delivery.

I'm pregnant and wonder if I can file a claim for State Disability Insurance (SDI) benefits? If so, for how long?
Yes. The usual disability period for a NORMAL pregnancy is up to four weeks before the expected delivery date and up to six weeks after the actual delivery. However, your doctor may certify to a longer period if the delivery is by Cesarean section, if there are medical complications, or if you are unable to perform your regular or customary job duties.

  • I've been out on a personal leave since 23 weeks. I wanted to keep them in as long as possible and my job is 90% on my feet . They would have taken me out at about 26 anyways because of my heart not working as well as it should be. This is all unpaid unfortunately. I get 16 weeks leave after the birth of my twins unpaid. (you get an extra month with twins). Twins will be born by March 21st, I really don't think I'd go much past 35 weeks (feb 29th). So i would be off till June-July...
