Heartburn/Reflux Help! PLEASE!

I have never had heartburn or acid reflux problems.... until now. My morning sickness finally went away, but now I have this horrible heartburn ALL THE TIME. It is to the point where I feel like it is going to make me throw up. I am not sure what the difference is between heartburn and acid reflux, so I am not sure which one I am experiencing but I am looking for help. I have been tracking the foods I am eating to see if there is a trigger, but like I said it is constant so I can't narrow it down. It is also affecting my sleep. I know I am okay to take Gaviscon and some other heartburns meds but then don't seem to be helping any. Does anyone know any other remedies or helpful advice? I just want a good night sleep, and to not feel this horrbile burning anymore....

  • chewable or liquid malox has been my good friend for about a year now.  i've tried tums and they don't work for me anymore.  if it continues, talk to your dr about it, but mine said it was normal.

  • I have had this lately too and it sucks big time.  Zantac 75 twice a day helped me a lot.  I have also been avoiding acidic foods and making sure not to lie down for at least 1/2 hour after eating (this has been so hard since I"m so exhausted!).  It's almost gone for me now but I still feel it occasionally.  I think it was Zofran that actually caused it for me, so I stopped taking that too.

  • I also highly recommend the Zantac. Talk to your dr. about the dosing before you start.

Indigestion is my worst pregnancy symptom, each pregnancy. And each pregnancy it starts earlier and earlier. My first one I suffered through with Tums. My second one I discovered the Rolaids worked much better. And with my third I finally discovered Zantac. What sweet relief!!

For me it was never a question of what or when I ate, it just always happened, so I wouldn't stress too much about that stuff.

  • Mint flavored chewing gum...as you chew it the bubbles in your spit settle the heart burn.  I know it's hard to believe but it works!

  • I have GERD (gastrointestinal reflux disorder) and during pregnancy it's miserable. I describe my symptoms exactly as you described yours. I wake up feeling acidic and constantly have to eat to keep it at bay. I take Zantac but I don't even know if it really helps. I haven't found anything good.

  • A shot of apple cider vinegar with your meal is the ONLY thing that has actually helped my heartburn and reflux. It's totally worth gagging it down.

  • I'm sorry I don't have any advice but you could be telling the story of my daily life!   My m/s also has pretty much faded but I too developed this RIDICULOUS acid reflux/heartburn.  I'm sorry that you are going through it too!

  • I had severe reflux with DS. I threw up for 30 weeks of my pregnancy until I got a second opinion and was put on a much higher dose of Zantac and diagnosed with GERD. Why my OB allowed me to go on like that for so long, I don't know, but I know better now! For me, the reflux did not clear up at the end of pregnancy (which is what should happen) and I was not comfortable being on life-long meds, so I started working with professionals to find natural alternatives. This PG, I am try to stay med free and am thus far just using the information I've learned. I'll share it with you in case it is helpful.

-I stopped drinking milk and that made a HUGE difference. I think I developed lactose intolerance while PG. I've heard that raw milk may still work for me, but it is illegal in my state.

-Papaya enzyme (in a chewable tablet) is a natural way to help. Eating fresh papaya also can help.

-This PG I am focusing on eating LOADS of protein and that makes a huge difference for my stomach. I don't eat a ton of meat, so cheese and greek yogurt (I am ok w. fermented dairy), almonds, nut butters, eggs, beans (not green beans). Protein is like magic for me. When I feel sick, I eat a few spoonfuls of greek yogurt and it starts to help almost right away.

-eat slowly and chew excessively as saliva is a natural digestive aid. Suck hard candies to stimulate saliva (I like lemonheads).

-try taking digestive enzyme tablets with food

    -try probiotics

-minimize sugar and simple carbs, don't eat sugar or simple carbs on an empty stomach

-This one no one has been able to fully explain, but with my PG with DS I had to stop drinking plain water. My stomach would turn into a bubbling vat of acid.  My dr thought maybe the PH of my gut had changed, but that didn't really make sense to me. In order to keep it down, I had to mix it with something containing sugar or fructose (not great for minimizing sugar, though).

-See a chiropractor who specializes in PG. There are adjustments that helps with reflux.
