For all the new MoMs-to-be

I try to post this every once in a while. These are some graphics I made up in my spare time to explain this aspect of twinning.

  • This is awesome! I always wondered when I was pregnant about the Di/Di, Di/Mono etc and now I know! Yay. BTW - I am the product of a MO/MO pregnancy 30 year ago where they (my mom, dad, and doctors) didn't find out my mom was carrying twins until a week before we were born at gestational age 39w3D. My mom is my hero!

  • Wow!  You describe it better than the doctors do.  Are there many on this board that had di/di twins that ended up identical??   My dr really never brought this up.

Yep, my girls were di/di and they are identical. I had a DNA test done to find out for sure, but I suspected they were.

My boys were di/di and are identical.  We also had to do the DNA testing and we're glad we did because we really thought they were fraternal but it turns out we were wrong. :)

  • Yay! Thank you. Mine are di/di, I'm really curious to see if they are fraternal or identical.

All of this. I would never have known about the possibility that my di/di pregnancy could result in identicals had it not been for this board! My doctor never even mentioned it.

Add me to the di/di ID club.  Just found out Friday :D  (PS....bribing Ernesto at Affiliated Genetics actually WORKS!  haha)

  • I remember during my pregnancy, the OB nurse insisted that they HAD to be fraternal, since they were di/di. Thanks to this board, I knew enough to roll my eyes at her. :P

  • What awesome pictures! Thank you!

I had no idea that Di/Di could be identical. Mine are di/di and have been told since my 5 week ultrasound that they are fraternal...it made sense to me being that they each have their own sac and placenta. However, we recently found out that both babies are boys, so now I'm wondering the possiblity of them being identical.

For the ladies who had a DNA test done, will they do that in the hospital when they're born? Is it routine, or something you need to request? TIA!

  • They told me that my di/di were "probably" fraternal. They came out looking, well, id. So I ordered the DNA test a few months later and my di/di twins are ID. I think most of us used Affiliated Genetics, which is a private company and the test was $150. I think that would be was cheaper than asking a hospital to do it.
  • That's so interesting that di/di can still be identical. I never knew that. Nice graphics, btw - thanks for sharing!

  • The split has to happen very early (day 2 or 3, I believe) for di/di to be identical. So, for example, we knew for sure our di/di girls were fraternal because we did IVF and a six-day transfer. The split would have happened in a petri dish, and I'm sure someone would have noticed!

this. it should be noted that most (if not all) di/di identicals are either spontaneous or result from other fertility treatments. so if you did IVF, chances are your di/di twins are fraternal.

  • I didn't know di/di could be identical either... I still don't think mine are, but now I know why my cousin was arguing with me about it because her sister in law's ID twins were in 2 sacs.

  • Thanks pea-kay! I think I need to print this out and hand it to family members. My twins are di/di, but since we found out they are boys all I keep getting asked is if they're identical. We tell them most likely no, because they are di/di and the result of ivf, but people just don't get it. It's annoying. Not sure if a 3dt transfer would make a difference or not, but I don't think they'll be identical at all.

  • Another thing my OB mentioned is proximity in the uterus very early on. My boys are spontaneous and Di/Di. When I asked my OB about this because I read on this board that there was a chance of them being identical she said if the split had happened early they would be closer together inutro at an 8wk scan. Mine were seriously as far apart as you could get.
