No Job, No Money, No Attorney

I'm going to DTA at the end of the month. I temp as a hygienist, some months I do better than others, Dec I did well (enough to pay some bills/debt) since there were a lot of people taking time off. Now I think I'm working a total of 16 hours this month.

I've been looking very actively for a job, I've had 3 interviews, and nothing came of any of them.

I know DTA offers free legal help, great, but I'm dealing with something that I think needs the BEST attorney to make sure my son is safe from STBXH. And it's going to be a tough case to build.

What did you do if you have no income to make sure you could pay a good attorney? I was thinking to get a loan, but I have bad credit now due to being stuck with thousands of dollars of medical bills all in collections... I'm overwhelmed :[

  • Can you borrow money from your parents?  That's how I'm paying for my attorney.  I think I'm going to owe them for the rest of my life at the rate things are going, but you have to do whatever it takes to protect your LO.

No, they are financially unable to do anything other than provide me a temporary place to stay, food, and if need be anything for L.

  • What about a credit card?  I know you said your credit is bad due to debt, but it's a way to pay.  Is your STBXH currently working?  If he is, and you start the divorce process, he could be ordered to help pay for your attorney.

I think you should at least make some appointments for consults with an attorney or two.  The consults are normally free and they will give you some advice and you can talk about payment plans.

  • The best attorneys are in legal aid in ma. It is very very competitive to do public interest legal work.  There is a joke that you need to be poor or rich in ma to get good legal representation in mass. Just an FYI.

most free attorneys around here have te beat experience and the best educations.   For a good atty out of pocket expect billing at 500-700 an hour.

    Give legal services a chance.

    SURPRISE! Here comes #3!
  • I'd give legal services a chance but you can also do your own homework with some of the time you would be normally working.  If my idiot of a brother in law can beat the justice system from reading up in a legal library I am pretty sure anyone can. (He was locked up by the 8th grade and never attended high school)  Do your homework.  Learn how the law works.  The more you read up and study the easier time you will have making a decision if your free lawyer has your best interest or not.

  • My attorney is taking payments. Thank goodness. He's $250/hour so I can't afford that when I'm trying to care for a child on my own! So maybe ask about a payment plan like a PP said above.
