EBF-ing Mommas

How is it going?

Scott and I will hit our six month bf-ing anniversary tomorrow.    If you let me be a bit of a AW.....  Yay Us!!! We made it to my first goal with no formula.

Are you guys still thinking about a full year?  What is your next BF-ing goal?

I'm just going to go with the flow and not stress.  I'd like to reach the year mark.  I really hope my supply continues to be strong.

Any tips for bf-ing post six months?

Re: EBF-ing Mommas

  • Its going great. I love it, and plan to keep it up for a while. I haven't given little man any solids, and want to keep it that way. I love the smell-free diaper pail! I drink a lot of Mother's Milk tea to help with my supply, which has been solid so far. I'm stoked at being able to EBF. Its a huge accomplishment for me.

  • Also still EBF. Tried formula maybe 3 times total (once in the beginning when my supply was super low and then again at the doc's recommendation to help him sleep more and me pump less). I'd like to get to the 1 year mark so I could avoid the cost of formula. I've been very fortunate in the supply department and I'm just hoping it keeps up. I'm now pumping 3x/day which has helped with my sleep issues. Fenugreek is on standby in the event I need it. I think I'm also ok if and when my boobs decide to stop. We've made it this far!! Yay!

  • First of all, congrats!  That's awesome that you have never given formula.  I am still breastfeeding my DD, but after EBF for 4 months, I had to give her a few formula bottles due to a few different reasons, but she is back to BFing all the time now.  I'm also quite proud of myself, especially considering that it has not always been an easy journey for me.

I really don't know if we'll make it to a year.  I'm just so happy to have made it nearly 6 months. :)  I have never had a real goal; I've always said I take it one day at a time, lol.  As you said, I like to go with the flow as well, so I guess we will see what happens!

  • Congrats to you both!

We started on formula (NICU) until my stash was big enough to feed him EBM when I wasn't there. It only took about 5 days. We'll start solids next week, but I'll probably mix with BM.

I want to continue through the first year mark. Once he can start cow's milk, we will probably start to wean. BFing is one of my most favorite things, but I will definitely enjoy having my body back.

  • Congratulations, lob! That's great :)
I am also pleased that we've never used formula, and I have no intention of anything. G and I both love nursing. I plan on letting her self-wean. I plan to let her try avocado @ 6 mos but I'm in no hurry to start solids.

  • Congratulations!

6 months was my goal (almost there) but I am hoping I can go through a year if thats what she wants.  We have tried her on solids (avocado, sweet potato, and rice) but she really doesn't want much to do with them yet so we are waiting a bit longer.

I really hope we can continue through a year because I do enjoy nursing her and I believe in the benefits and LOVE the cost savings!

I have been lucky my supply is strong, even through the flu and a 2 day trip away from LO.  I have to be diligent about the water and the pumping though.  I have the fenugreek on hand if needed!

  • Congrats, Lob!!

We just made it to 5 months yesterday, although I take for granted that this is an accomplishment.  I think it's just been so easy that I'm just like, yeah, I feed my kid by boob, so what?

We'll probably BF until nearly 2, 18 months at the earliest.  We don't drink cow's milk, and almond milk just doesn't have as much calories as he may need.

Tips for the future:  As they get older, the "biting" will start.  It's not a sign that you should wean.  Yes, it hurts and it's startling, but you can teach them to stop biting.  And, it doesn't happen all the time.  It's just something that we suffer through.  When BF'ing normally, you don't even notice their teeth.  While they're teething, they'll likely want to nurse more for comfort, and that may mean more biting than usual.  But, it depends on how important BF'ing is to you whether or not you put up with it long enough to teach them to stop.

  • Congrats to you!  We're also doing great.  DD has started on solids (about an oz a day) which she seems to be enjoying.   It hit me the other day that this wasn't just for fun and that some day she'll have to wean and that made me obnoxiously sad.

My supply is still great.   I've been lucky (?) enough to have an oversupply, so I we haven't had any dips yet.   Then again I expect my period any day, so we'll see.

My goal is at least a year.  I'm open to going longer, but we'll see what DD wants to do.

My only hang up is that DD now has two teeth, and if I try to nurse her when she's not hungry, she fakes a latch and then bites me.  I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to do about that.  When the top two come in, I may not survive...

  • Congrats to everyone!!

Im still BF no formula here and no plans on using it...its going great...im pumping at work what she is eating at daycare (actually pumping more than she is taking at daycare) and at home she is on the boob all the time

I plan to keep it up till she weens herself...thats what I did with DD # 1 which was at 18 months

tips...hope you dont have a biter....I was lucky with my DD that she didnt bite but my niece was a big biter with  her momma

  • Well, after EPing for 8 weeks, we are BFing!

At 4.5 months we are still going strong. She gets two meals of solids a day per her pedi. Milk alone does not seem to satisfy her anymore.

Our goal is a year, but I am willing to go up to 1.5years.

  • Things have been good as long as I survive the 4MW! I am hoping to make the 1 year mark and so far so good. She is gaining enough weight but is on the small side like her daddy (he is skinny and tall, no fair!) so we are good!
  • Congrats mama's!

BFing is still going strong here too.  I have been worried since going to back to work that my supply will tank and have ordered Mother's Milk tea in case.  I must say that pumping is going well and if DD would amp up her milk intake during the day I'd be super happy.

The other day SO went to warm a bottle for her and the milk in the fridge had turned.  She didn't drink the last bit of freezer milk he'd thawed and I said well "you may have to go get formula"  his response:  I am not giving her formula!  Luckily, she took the thawed milk.  I know formula is not bad, I'm just such a believer in the b00b!

DD had been eating some banana lately and has tried avocado and honeydew.  I feel like a big hypocrite because I swore up and down no food before 6 months, but it really helps curb her hunger during the day when she won't take the bottle.  I love that even after she eats a bit or when I get home from work all she wants is to cuddle in and breastfeed :)

  • Congratulations!!!!!

I'm EBF here, barely.  My oversupply is long gone and I've got formula standing by.  When I got AF and returned to my very stressful job full-time, and LO had a growth spurt ... I was going ml by ml and had to dip into my small freezer stash a few times.  I'm BFing and pumping more frequently to boost supply.  I think it's doable if I can keep my sanity at work.  It didn't occur to me how long I would BF, so I will be pleasantly surprised if we make it to 6 mo and at that point would like to go 1 yr EBF, but am wary given my supply variances.  FX.

  • Congrats, mamas!

We'll reach our 6 month BF milestone in a week! We did have to supplement with formula in the beginning, but we've been going strong ever since. He does get solids every now and then. I have no intention to wean anytime soon, I just want to make it to a year. After that, he can decide when he's done :)

  • Not a drop of formula here still :) After 6 months we'll start a little food, I'm in no rush! I plan on nursing until she self weans, although I would probably wean at 2.5 if she doesn't before then. Thats how long I nursed my son and it worked out well. To PP aking if it's EBF if you pump, of course it is!

  • We are still at despite still having problems and intense pain and still at 5.5 months using the shield. She got formula twice for 5 ounces total, mince at 5 days old after she continued losing weight even losing while nursing, and the in the er at three months when she wouldn't latch and I hadn't brought my shield in the rush of taking her to the er in the ambulance. I start work next week so we will see how it goes but I'm very proud of my stash I've built, about 400 ounces in our deep freezer.

  • Happy half birthday Scott!!

Congrats for making it to your first BFing goal! I will be with you next week :) I am also proud to say that B has never had a drop of formula. My original goal, before having B, was only 6-8 wks! Now that we are in the groove of things I hope to go to 1 year. That said, each month will be a mini celebration.

  • Great job, mamas! I am also proud to say I've almost hit the 6 month mark, and Max has never had anything but mama's milk! My goal right now is pumping - I'm trying to build up a big stash so I can go away for the weekend at the end of Feb!

  • Congrats mamas!

The only formula DD has had was in her first 48 hours.  She was a very low birthweight for her gestational age and her blood sugar was very low as well (in the 40's).  She took maybe 10 cc's every 2-3 hours until my milk came in, so she maybe got a total of 8-10 oz of formula in her life.  I'm pretty proud of that!

Despite thrush, clogged ducts, mastitis and oversupply, we are still going strong!  I'm hoping to make it to a year to avoid the cost of formula.  I have over a month's worth of BM stashed in the freezer, so that will help a lot.  She hasn't had any solids yet, but we are going to start that in the next few weeks.

  • Congrats to all!  I love being able to BF, I've had some issues with supply, but I've managed to produce what DS needs.  I would love to be able to put some away in the freezer, and every once in a while I'm able to.  I stress over supply (which doesn't help anything at all!) but overall we're doing pretty good.  I pump at least 3 bottles at work (that's what he eats when I'm not with him), and he nurses when we're together.

For a little while we went through a stretch where he wouldn't nurse for one feeding a day, he'd get frustrated and I'd end up giving him a bottle, and then pump...I stopped resorting to the bottle and he realized it wasn't worth the fight.  Now we never have any issues nursing.

I plan to go to a year yet, as long as my supply can handle it.  I think the biggest reason I had supply issues is because I had to go back to work after only two weeks.  Some days it's hard to get in enough pumping sessions...ugh!

    Congrats mommas!

We just weaned completely in the past few weeks, and I feel so weird about it. Last night I actually latched him on just to calm down a fussy period, and there was still milk in there. However it also gave me shooting pains in my ute area, so I don't think we'll be doing that again. It was like starting BFing all over again with the contractions.

    Keep up the good work!

  • Congrats to all you mamas!

We're still going strong with EBFing...no formula and so far only a few bottles...which is about to change soon (the bottles part...I start back to work next week).  We've had some real struggled - mastitis, thrush, shield he refused to wean from for 3 months, oversupply, possibly high lipase and having to trash a TON of frozen milk, etc...but I love BFing and have found myself actually feeling a little bit of a loss that he has become so efficient and doesn't nurse for as long.  Like I feel like we nurse SO much less than before, and I miss the duration of that closeness and time together.

My goal for BFing has always been the full year and then letting him self wean, and that's still my goal.  I start work next week, so will just be diving into pumping and bottles all that jazz.  I'm incredibly nervous, but trying to be zen about it all and realize that at this point he's had a tremendous benefit from all these months of EBFing, and it's unlikely we'll have many problems moving forward.  I <3 Bfing.  Will miss it when we're done so so much.

  • Congrats to everyone!

I have nursing tea on hand, haven't had to use it yet.

Although, I think my supply may be starting to go down? I don't get nearly as engorged as I used to.

In the event that I'd need some help, if I were to take fenugreek or blessed thistle to increase supply, how much would you take, how often, and in what format?

    Thanks in advance...

  • Time to change my ticker ;) LOL

Re: not feeling engorged...I learned in a LLL meeting that it's normal to start to feel more balanced and less like you've got rocks on your chest all the time.  The woman telling me about it (when my LO was only a few weeks old) said that around 4 or 5 months or so, I'd notice that my breasts were generally always soft and no longer got engorged and that I'd probably freak about supply but not to worry and that it's normal.

re: Fenugreek, I think the BFing board would have LOTS of advice for how to start with that if needed.

  • I still EBF and also haven't given formula. We aren't at the 6 month mark yet, but everything is still going great. I'm still hoping to make it to a year and I totally think that's possible.

ETA: Maybe I shouldn't have responded in this thread since I pump when I am work and she gets bottles of BM at daycare. She doesn't have formula and only gets the breast when we are together though, so I think of myself as an exclusive breastfeeder but maybe I'm not...  So sorry if my post is "off topic"!

I don't know what everyone else's take is on this, but to me, EBMilk is the same as EBFed - Way to go Mama!

Today is DD's 6-month birthday and we're still going strong on the BFing. DD just won't take a bottle so my freezer stash is going to be be used for cereal it seems. My plan is to EBF until we introduce cow's milk, at 12 months, then to slowly wean her. I BFed DD1 until 15-16 months and that worked well for us, so I'm hoping to do the same this time around.
