Need advice about preg. and job offer

I guess I'm outted now! lol! So I am expecting #2 in July! Hi Dani....! Anyway, I applied for a job in November before I knew I was pregnant. I have had the first and second interviews now and I am wondering what the protocol is if I get this new job? I have arrived in my second trimester, like this week. My last interview was Tuesday. I was told that a decision will be made by next week. Making me probably about 14-15 weeks pregnant at that time. The question is do I tell them at the time of the offer? Accept and then tell them or work a couple of weeks and then tell them? I obviously really want the job and it will be probably about 5 months before I deliver. This job would be a management position in which I need to establish myself with my workers. I know I can do this but I really need some opinions on how to approach it. I want to remain trustworthy but at the same time don't want to talk myself out of a great opportunity.

Thanks ladies for all the support and advice. It is very much appreciated. We also haven't told really anybody yet so no mentions on facebook or anything like that. We won't be public until all this is settled.

  • I was at the same position. I got a job offer in November (interviewed in Oct) and will be due in July. I just started in December.

I told them when i got the offer. For me, I saw it as a way to decide if I will join the company. I don't want to join and then have people feel that I wasnt fair by not telling them and they have to plan ahead for my time off too. I know they couldn't rescind the offer, since that would be illegal, but I wanted to get a sense if the place is a family-friendly place, or if they look down on people who have personal priorities too.

It turned out that my boss has been very supportive, esp when I need to take time off to go to my doctor's appointments.

I asked this question before and people have different answers. But for me, if they will take it against you that you're pregnant (welcome you less, not support you, etc.) then I don't think I would want to work in that environment, whether or not I'm pregnant.

  • i would say, once you have the offer letter in hand, let them know.

  • Woohoo! Congrats, R! Those must have been some lucky mimosas at the brunch in Danville back in October!

As for your situation, I agree with periwinkle. I'd wait until you have an offer in hand, and then I'd bring it up. I think that would go a longer way towards establishing trust than waiting a few weeks after you start. Plus, if they react poorly to it, it would probably make it easier for you to walk away from a potential bad situation.

I would just be sure to provide them with assurances that you fully intend to return to work after having the baby (assuming that's the case). That will likely be one of their biggest concerns. Having you out for a couple of months, post-birth, is less of a big deal if you intend to return and stick around.

  • Congraulations R!!!!!  O is going to make such a great big sister!!

As for the new job thing... my approach would be to wait until I got the offer (or at the salary negociation stage) before I mention my pregnancy.  I would consider maternity leave similar to asking for a later start date, or to take a preplanned/paid for vacation.  I wouldn't mention it until after they say they want you.

    GOOOOOD LUCK!!

  • Thanks guys. I am so happy to have you to bounce ideas off of. It seems like it is unanimous! I'll let you guys now. To answer Janet, no not local.
  • I'd tell them after the offer is accepted.

    Big Congratulations R!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Doing some mental math re the last time I saw you...sneaky lady!! Congratulations!! No advice, but so exciting!!
  • Congrats!!! I applied for a new position, and then was 12 weeks pregnant at the interview. I took the position, but waited until I was 20 weeks to tell them (lots of scarves and the winter clothes bundled up my belly).

Go for it, and tell them AFTER you accept. :)

  • i interviewed at 5 - 5 1/2 month pg and waited until i had an offer in hand before i told them about the pg and that i would asking for a short leave. i got the offer and then told them about the pg and asked for a short leave (6-8 wks) and they approved my leave in my revised offer letter.

i would sit tight until the offer letter came in ... THEN spring into action.
