help with vday craft :)

I'm going to make those cute heart shaped mixed crayons. I'm just not sure what size I should make. Amazon has like a zillion options...

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_10?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=heart+silicone+mold&sprefix=heart+sili%2Caps%2C210

It's for preschoolers, so the top one (12 hearts) is 1.5 inches wide and the next one is 2.5 inches and a mini heart is 1 inch

there is one with like 28 hearts that are 1.5 inches (i think there are like 22 kids in the school in total so that makes it just one batch in the oven ;) )

So really I'm rambling, would you go big medium or mini hearts?  and would you do mixed all sorta of colors or just shades of red and pink?

  • I would go for the medium hears. It will be easier for their little hands to grip. Those are super cute and I admire you because after doing the mustache crayons for Linc's birthday last year I swore I would never be melting crayons again.

  • I just measured ours to check.  It is 1 3/4" wide at its widest point.  It is a Wilton silicon thing I got at Joann's last year or year before.

I find them SUPER easy to make.  Really truly simple.  Just make sure they are completely cool when you take them out or they are more likely to break.

And, to avoid buying all sorts of crayons, I'd say mix all colors.  That's what I do.

  • I don't know about size, but I learned a few things from experience from melting crayons.  Crayolas are better because the paper comes off easier- generic brands are usually harder to get the paper off. Getting the paper off is what is a PITA about these, everything else easy!  #2 make sure you use an actual silicone pan.  LOL!  The first time I did them I wasn't really thinking about it and used an ice cube tray (soft plastic) but it wasn't actually silicone, just looked like it.  It melted in the oven. :(  If you aren't mixing the colors (I made lego minifig crayons for A's party so I wanted soild colors.) I found it easier to melt in the microwave in a pyrex measuring cup and then pour into mold.  To get them to harder faster stick in the freezer, and like pp said make sure they are copletely cooled before pulling them out.
  • I vote medium size crayons and I'm in misjenn's camp. They are a PITA! I made some last year for holiday presents and I too swore I would never make them again.

Good luck!!!  However, I like that idea and I'm just going to buy heart shaped crayons.

  • medium it is, i'll report back with results :)
