D.C. Area Babies

Best (inexpensive) places to find a nanny?

We're in need of a full time nanny in the very near future. BOTH of my babysitters gave notice yesterday (one is moving out of town and the other is flaking on us for the second time in a year... it's our own fault for hiring her back but Liam adores her).  I have an ad on Sitter City currently. Anything else you guys suggest? Or if anyone knows of a nanny looking for 30 hours a week or more, please send that person my way! We were looking at some referral agencies (like White House nannies and the referral fee alone is like 2k!)

  • Did you check out DC Urban Moms forum? You can post an ad and look through ads nannies have posted.

I'm sorry you're going through child care turmoil! It's all so stressful...

  • We found our nanny on DC Urban Mom. Does your neighborhood have a listserve?  Mine does and there are families who post all the time for their former/soon to be former nannies. We interviewed several nannies through that as well.
  • I have liked care.com better than sittercity.  I think it's around $35 per month, but if you google you can find a coupon code for 25 or 30% off.  Each time I've posted for our regular (8 hours per week) babysitting job, I've found someone I've liked.  Have to weed through many bad applicants, too, but overall I've been happy with it.

  • Yeah I sort of regret dropping the $88 for SitterCity.  I should have done care.com and will probably do that.  I posted an add on Urban DC and responded to some but haven't heard anything yet.

  • do you have any friends that are MONA members? (Moms of North Arlington) They have a pretty good list serve (from what I hear, I'm not a member) and I know of a couple people who have found childcare through there. Maybe someone could post a message for you?

I belong to MOMS of Falls Church and have posted there, but most suggested DC Urban Moms (I have an ad running).

It seems as though the best way to find a nanny is to get lucky - the person needs to be currently employed with a position ending soon and the family is nice enough to find a replacement family.

  • I'm close by in Alexandria and on several listserves.  We get emails all the time for families who are advertising for their nannies.   Let me know if you want me to forward any of the recent listings. I can also send an email with your information.  Some of the nannies really want to stay in our small neighborhood, but many are willing to travel within a reasonable distance.
  • Hi Birdgirl, I'm in Alexandria, too and am looking for some good listservs.  Any recommendations?
