s/o later bedtimes

Am I the only one who has a night owl?  We put DD to bed at 8pm every night (sometimes It's 8:15) and she usually falls asleep between 9 and 10.  Sometimes she reads in bed, sometimes she plays with dolls, sometimes she empties her dresser and dresses herself and dolls up, sometimes she asks for drinks, cuddles, another story...  Anything but sleep.  She is not really a morning person, she gets up between 7:30 and 8 on weekdays and will occasionally sleep till 9 on the weekends.  She still naps, 1.5 to 2 hours at pre-school and 2-3 hours at home on the weekends (although some days she will just do quiet time).    I think she gets plenty of sleep, I am not concerned, but going to bed early is just not in her cards.

Re: s/o later bedtimes

  • My kid seems to have a late bedtime compared to most toddlers. He's usually asleep by 8:30. The main reason for the later bedtime is our schedules. I could possibly push his bedtime to 8 pm, but any earlier than that is impossible.

  • My kids are hardly ever in bed before 9pm, and up until recently it's usually closer to 9:30pm.  DD hasn't napped since she was 2.5, and DS1 has given up napping (though he still needs one), so I'm bumping their bedtime up earlier to accommodate his need for sleep.

They're usually up that late because of the chance of seeing DH, but I've also been a night owl my whole life - I remember my parents putting me to bed at 8pm and lying in bed for forever, even listening to the theme song of the 11pm news come on downstairs.  I just can't go to sleep early.  And so I've naturally put my kids on a similar schedule because it worked when I only had DD and continued to work when I had DS1...we could sleep in every morning.  DD going to preschool every weekday has made that not the ideal situation, but if I put them to bed much earlier, they would stay awake anyway (especially now since they share a room and entertain each other).  But something definitely has to change before she goes to all-day kindergarten and DS1 is in preschool next year.

  • I'm wondering if DD will be a night owl as she gets older. She managed to get herself to a sitting position the last couple nights and was playing with a bumper and I left a book in there one night and she started "reading" it. That's kind of why I asked about the later bedtimes because I feel like she might want to stay up later and may not need to go to bed earlier, but I don't know. DH and I are both night owls so I wouldn't be surprised if she ends up being that way as well.

Rome - she really started pushing back on the bedtime around age 2.  Before then, there would be some late nights, but mostly she went to sleep within a half hour.  We put DS down at 8 as well and he usually sings to himself and falls asleep within 15-20 minutes. I was the same way as a kid, I would read under my covers, convince my mom to challenge me at Super Mario Brothers, do anything except go to bed.  Now as a sleep deprived adult, I would do a whole lot to get those minutes of sleep back.
