More info on the gender of baby at 12 weeks!!!

Yesterday i saw that many women couldn't believe it's possible to find out the gender of baby at 12 weeks. I live in Europe and here this particular u/s at 12 weeks is done by an u/s specialist and not your regular ob/gyn. They are very experienced and look not only at the genitalia but the shape of the pelvis. I know women in the US may not believe this but all my friends and relatives who have gone to this doctor have had a correct prediction. I guess we'll find out next week!!! I'll keep you posted!!!!

  • That's pretty cool! Can't wait to hear how it goes. We have a 12 week ultrasound next week to and I'm going to ask them to look down there and take a guess. Of course I won't be buying nursery stuff or anything but it would be fun to see if it's right in 8 weeks.

  • Hey if you can find out early and start getting stuff early more power to you. I would love to know earlier!

Do you also go to a 18-20 week anatomy scan where they also confirm the gender?

  • I tried to make people listen to you...or at least ask more questions...I thought this was becoming more common here too. Have fun
  • I think you are referencing the "angle of the dangle" theory. It is more accurate than 50/50 but still riddled with errors. Good luck! The tech guessed last time at my 12 week NT scan and they were wrong.

This time I'm having fun with the Ramzi theory...if its correct, this one is a girl. We shall see!

  • Yes we do. The early one is done at 12 weeks and the later one at 20 to confirm everything is going well.
  • There is a blood test too you can take I think as early as 7 weeks, that I think is 90 something percent accurate in gender prediction...I think it picks up on a certain hormone.
  • Where in Europe do you live? I live in Europe, too, and people typically find out at the 20-ish week anatomy scan here like they do in the US, although sometimes will get a guess at the 12-ish week NT scan...either way, we're team green!  Good luck!

This. I am fairly certain fetal anatomy develops the same in Europe as it does the US. No one was arguing that they can try, but I would put pretty little faith in a guess at sex at 12 weeks.

And in fact have told my tech not to bother at past 12 week scans.

eta: And due to my history, I have Level II NT scans. It really doesn't make THAT much of a difference this early on.

I agree with this 110% because your baby is born in Eurpoe doesn't mean he/she will develop sooner and with a more accurate result - just an FYI

we have level 2 and 3d ultrasounds here too (Im in Canada) ther eis another forum I go on regularily- its down but I wish it was up so I can explain .. oh I found this

This page has some great photographs showing very early development of male and female genitalia.  You can see how boy and girl parts look almost identical in the early weeks, but the "angle of the dangle" might give a clue.

  • It's not a matter of believing or not - medical professionals have said that boy and girl fetus's are identical until at least 14 weeks. Everything's still on the outside at that point, boy or girl, so whatever you're told is nothing more than a guess.
  • I was told at 14 weeks I was having a boy.  Guess what?  I have a daughter.
  • I know it's still a prediction but yes it's done be a perinatologist (sp?) and it's a higher level technology.

Even if many of you don't agree with it you don't have to put someone down for being excited abouut hearing a prediction.  The original poster clearly stated it was still a guess and just thought it was fun.

I'm not finding out until 18-20 weeks but don't fault anyone for what they do, be it find out or wait until the baby is born.  I think it's fun either way.  We are here to support one another and be excited that we are all growing little humans!!

  • We were living in London when I had my 12 week scan with my son and the doctor told us then that he was a boy.  He told me he will never say that early unless he is certain.  I didn't run out and buy a bunch of blue clothes but it was fun to know that early.

  • Heck even if it is just a guess...it's fun to speculate! Take it with a grain of sand and don't go buying everything yet, but I will probably ask my us tech to predict the sex early, why not? I will be happy either way.
