My due date was yesterday and my doctor scheduled my induction for Monday morning (1.23). I was just curious if any other moms out there had inductions (for any of their kids) and if so, what their experience was like.
Most of what I've been reading has just been scaring me a bit...things like labor is more painful and intense, c-sections are more frequent, etc. I know it's not healthy for the baby to be in there much past her due date, but the thought of an induction is getting me all worked up and anxious!
I would appreciate any advice from anyone who has been induced...especially if your story is a positive and upbeat one! Thanks!
Re: Induction experience?
My water broke at 42 weeks but I never went into labor so I had to start Pit. I consider it an induction because other then my water breaking, I never went into labor on my own. I was in labor for 49 hours and the pain was the worst thing I could possibly describe. I was vomiting and shivering, I was going in and out of consciousness. There was no relief, no break, it was just constant unbearable pain until I finally broke down and got the epi. Then my labor completely stopped progressing, I didn't dilate for 12 hours and they were threatening a C-section. I finally dilated just in time and pushed for 3.5 hours until LO came out. He just was not ready. I am hoping to avoid the pit this time and have a more normal birth experience.
That is my experience, but I have friends that went in at 6am got a little pit, went into labor and had there baby a few hours later. I think my experience is the exception not the rule. Good luck!

My only issue with my induction was that it took forever which i wasn't expecting. I went in barely dilated and effaced at 41 weeks. It took 27 hours of pitocin before LO arrived but I progressed steadily the entire time and was able to deliver vaginally. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Labor is intense and painful. With or without induction. I don't know if induction makes it more so or not, I've only had labor with pitocin. Hopefully I'll be able to compare the two in the next week or so!
My induction with my son was not the ordeal that you hear nightmare stories about. I went in at 1cm dilated and 80% effaced and exactly 40 weeks.I was induced for low amniotic fluid and possible cord compression. they started the IV pitocin drip at 10pm and upped the dosage every 1/2 hour to hour.
My water broke on its own around 1am, I think. At about 2am I was close enough to 3cm that they gave me an L&D room. The contractions were still not very strong at that point. By 3am that changed and things were starting to get intense. I got the very strong feeling that I could NOT do it anymore, that the pitocin was too much, that my body couldn't withstand it. Turns out I was in transition. by 3:30 I was 7cm and by 4:30 I was pushing.
I never needed or asked for pain medication. I'm not saying it was painless, but that was my plan and I was able to stick to it despite the pitocin. It WAS intense. It did hurt like a b*** for sure. And I don't fault anyone who gets the epi! I'm just putting that in there to let you know it's possible and it doesn't have to be any certain way.
anyway, I pushed for 40 minutes and my son was born at 5:08am. 6lbs 5oz and 19.5 inches long. About a 7 hour labor from start to finish. I can't complain about that!!
I wish you all the best. Remember that no matter what you hear, YOUR experience doesn't always have to be the same. And no matter what happens, when it's done, you'll have that precious little one in your arms and that's all that will matter in the world.
I was induced 2 weeks ago and had a difficult labor. I went in Tuesday night and was not dilated or effaced at all, just soft cervix. We started Cytotec at 9pm. When they put in the last dose at 6am I still had not made any progress. My OB came in at 9am and I was 4cm, 90% so he went ahead and broke my water. DD's heart rate dropped to 60, so they did an amino infusion while they were placing the internal monitor and catheter.
I was having bad back pain, so they placed the epidural. The nurse had me trying different positions trying to get DD to turn. The back labor was horrible, but after the epi it wasn't too bad. I did scratch myself badly several places due to how itchy the meds made me. I was at 10cm at around 2pm. The epi failed around 9cm. We finally got DD to turn, but the back labor did not stop. The anesthesiologist came in to try and ease my pain, gave me 4 boosters thru the epi line but nothing helped. He believes when they had me moving around the epi slipped out a tiny bit, so the only thing he could do was replace the epi, but there wasn't time.
I started pushing a little after 2pm. When we got to where you could see DD's head (not sure what station, but she was pretty low) we started to have more problems. She got stuck on my pelvic bone and wouldn't drop any further. Then every time I would push her heart rate would drop. The nurse called my OB and he said I needed to stop pushing and wait for him. It took him about 10-15 minutes to get there, but it felt like an eternity. Once the OB came in he checked me out and asked the nurse to get his tools. I was told we needed to get her out and he was going to use forceps. He got the forceps in and told me to push again. It took 2 or 3 more pushes with the OB pulling to get her out. She started crying immediately and is perfect. I ended up with an episiotomy and 4 tears that had to be stitched up. DD was born at 4:51pm wednesday, so labor wasn't terribly long, but it was difficult. I don't think the induction had anything to do with how the actual labor went.

Forgive the typos and lack of formatting, I am on my phone. I had a VERY positive induction on jan 8th. They started pitocin at 8 am when I was 2 centimeters dialated. At 10:30, I was 3 cm so my doc broke my water and I got an epidural. I relaxed and rested with my family and progressed to a 5 cm around 4 pm. I took a nap from 4:15 pm to 4:45 pm when I woke up to feeling pressure. During that nap I progressed to a 9 and almost ready to push. They called the doc, my little sister, and she arrived and prepared for me to push. I started at 5:04 pm and pushed 7 times and Gavin Nicholas arrived at 5:19 pm. It was a beautiful and perfect labor. I would totally be induced again.
PS this was my first baby.
