Height of changing table/area

Just as the title says - how high is your dresser/changing table? I am planning on having a dresser built that I will use as a changing table for now and will then become the dresser in the nursery. However, I live abroad so I can't just go into a shop and see what it feels like to me - hence why i need help!

I have been looking at dimensions of changing tables online and most of them seem to be about 30 - 36inches in height. Now I'm fairly short (5ft 3) but that seems like a long way to bend over, even for me!

So my question is - when I give the dimensions to my workworker, how high should I ask for it to be so it will be comfortable for me to use as a changer?

 TIA

  • I'm curious about this too.

Just an FYI though, 36 inches is standard kitchen counter height, so maybe stand in your kitchen and pretend to change the baby to see how it feels?

  • With DS we had a dresser that had a wooden "lip" you could attach from the back (not 100% necessary really). And then put a foam changing pad on top. I just mesaured the dresser (no lip now) and its 34" add a few inches for the foam. I am  5'3" as well and always was very comfortable changing him, I never had to bend at all he was about at my hip height. DH is 5'11" and always changed him there as well with no issues, he may have had to bend a bit but it was totally fine.

I have a firend who just bought a long regular dresser and put a change pad on top. I've changed her LO there and although i had to bend a slight amount it wasn't an uncomfortable angle at all. Her DH is about the same height and he changes baby there as well.

When he change baby anywhere you bend to a degree anyways so I think that why it doesn't make a huge difference. We love our dresser, it has 3 drawers on each side and worked really well for us!

  • Ah... I forgot to add a few inches for the changing foam mat thingy that will be on the top! Thanks

  • The flat surface on our dresser is 34 inches.  I LOVE that height (I am almost 5ft. 4 in).  We just got a changing table and the flat surface where the pad sits is about 29 inches.  It's way too short and it hurts my back to change DD.  We're going to make the table taller somehow since we think the previous owner cut about 3 inches of leg off the table.
