forgive me if this is a stupid question. i feel like i recently heard it is acceptable to pluralize a proper noun ending w/an 's' by either examples...Amos' or Amos's.
what say the nestie grammar experts? my middle child's name ends with an 's' and now i am totally confused.
Re: grammar ?
The new correct way is with an 's--Amos's. (See the Chicago Manual of Style, rule 6.24 in the 14th edition, though I believe there are later editions out and the rule number may have changed.)
Rule 6.26 gives exceptions: Jesus (Jesus') and Moses (Moses').
(And if you'd like to get more precise, rule 6.27 states "Names of more than one syllable with an unaccented ending pronounced eez form another category of exceptions. Many Greek and hellenized names fit this pattern. For reasons of euphony the possessive s is seldom added to such names: Euripides' plays, Ramses' tomb, Xerxes' army...)
